Title: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: rdebolt on November 14, 2012,
I am sure that this is here somewhere, but I can't find it. Is there a way to set your modem up to have all of the settings for the etd manually input? The reason I ask is that when I run my lights it seems to kick everyone in my house out of the internet and my wife is getting very angry with me.

Just an FYI I have very limited knowledge of how the network functions.

E1.31 is multicast so the most elegant way if your router is choking would be to add a second network card to your machine and give it a different private IP block than the rest of your network and plug it straight into your etherdongle. Then setup your software to use this second card for E1.31.

Quick and dirty would be to unplug yourself from the network, give your card a static IP Address and plug it straight into the Etherdongle but you lose Internet and other Network connectivity this way.

try this...

if you're comfortable with installing cards into your computer, pick up a network card and install into your computer
if you're not comfortable, you can pick up a USB network adapter.
when you setup this card, you will need to setup this card to have it's own IP address.

you now have an added network port, and one that you already had in the computer.

plug one into your home network
plug the other one into the etherdongle

test your show, if it interferes with the internet, then swap the cables so that the wire going to the Etherdongle goes to the home network, and vice versa.

you'll need to setup the IP address on the port connected to the etherdongle

I am very comfortable installing another network card (I actually have one), but You and injury have already been helping me figure out another issue with my PC in the "porch" thread. Not sure I want to add to my problem until I can figure that out. I guess since I know that it is not the issue it won't hurt.

I'm kinda toying with the idea of a virtual machine running the show, but choosing it's output to the 2nd nic only, and choosing its sound device as a second sound card. so that i can still use the pc without  fear of a ding here and there showing up in the show.

So I take it that you are not running with a conductor this year?

Alot of newer motherboards have 2 Ethernet ports, so you may not even need to add another card.

Ok I have my machine reloaded.... FINALLY!.... Installed a new nic card and gave it an ip 192.168.2.25. Internet still working on MB nic, but nothing from PCI card. I have a cat5 directly from PC (New card) to etd and nothing. If I look at the network connections it show disconnected. I am assuming that it is looking for an internet or modem input, but all I am trying to connect is my Etd. Like I said I am no network guru so once again asking for help from the experts. Do I need to bridge the connections? Remember I am trying to keep from kicking everyone in my house off of the internet while I am running lights.

I do not have LSP loaded yet. I will be driving my show with Conductor , but have been testing with Xlights. I guess I will just have to go back to using my Internet network and scratch the second nic idea.

Interesting didn't realize Xlights doesn't seem to have a selection for NIC card, never used LOR myself. I know HLS (free) has network card selection in its output setup as well as light testing if you want to test things out http://joehinkle.com/HLS/

Win 7 64 I really wish that I could get it to work because in LOR and LSP it totally shuts down the internet. It does not in Xlights however.

Thanks But I really want to be able to look at the lights in what the sequnces are built in for tweeking purposes. I can drive it in Xlights so when it is time to go live I have confidence that the conductor will run shows ok. I want to be able to work with laptop in front of house and adjust my sequences. If I can get the 2nd nic to work I will use the Asus 330N for the wireless end.

Chris I have no problem trying that, but earlier I had connection the the Etd. It was just that LOR and Xlights were trying to use the other connection. I think that if I could get the outputs on those programs to see the second nic I would be good to go. I am fairly certain that I can get LSP to read the second nic, but I am waiting to reload LSP for couple of days.
Title: Re: Setting Modem for Etd?

the steps pushes the snd nic's priority to the top.
so that the multicast packets are sent across that nic.

then the fact that your original nic has a configured gateway, your internet connection flows there.

it should separate your network paths to where you want them to go.

But I am not even running a full load yet! I have not even started on any of my pixelnet! I am still in the testing stages!!!! Right now I am only running about 200 channels, but it does not seem to matter. Even a simple 4 channel sequence will shut the internet down. I don't know if it even matters, but I have a 50meg internet speed. For some reason it is like it closes all of the other ports to run the etd, except Xlights. So far it has been solid!

I just read through the thread and I'm not sure I understand how this is causing an issue for you.  I've been testing an Etd and the conductor for a while now and do not see any adverse affects on my home network when running a show.  I've been mainly using Vixen and the Conductor recently, but I just plugged in a spare Etd and am looping shows in Vixen and I see no adverse affects on my home network.

This has to be an issue of multicast affecting your internet router.  What's your complete network setup?  Computer plugged into a switch or wireless router that plugs into the modem?

From another post we know that if you use LOR software and have the listener running it will flood your network with multicast packets. (this is not the problem here I don't think) Using Wire Shark can help in tracking down what is happening with network congestion. http://www.wireshark.org/

I am not running Vixen so I cannot say how it would react for me. Yes my desktop for the most part has been connected directly to the router, BUT I have an Asus 330N that will do the same when connected. Also the software that is stopping my internet it is LSP and LOR.

It will do it even without the control panel running in LOR. If I just play a sequence it will stop the internet until I stop the play, then all is good.

Post by: Ron on November 18, 2012,
Sorry my post was not written well from addressing LOR and LSP. I understand that is the software you are running and I cannot simulate that since I do not have that running on my show PC, but I can simulate the Etd using multicast.

My confusion is more about how multicast could be causing a problem with your Internet connection. I understand you can flood your network with multicast packets, but really that should only influence multicast listeners and possibly the device generating the packets. That is why I asked about the network setup. The only way your Internet connection should be affected is if your gateway is processing the multicast packets which should not be the case.

Can you detail your network setup for us?  How PCs connect, your router, your modem?  That might help us understand why multicast is causing the issue. In a former life, before I retired, I was a network engineer so I've worked with multicast quite a bit.

OK, so it might be the Multicast setting in your router.  The way mine is setup at home is PC, Etd are connected to a switch which is connected to a wireless router.  The wireless router is my default gateway.  The wireless router WAN port is connected to my cable modem which connects to the internet.  In your setup your cable modem is your WAN connection and router for your internal network.

Somewhere in your cable modem setup is the option to Enable/Disable Multicast Services.  By default it is Enabled.  Try Disabling that and see if it has an affect on your problem.  That sounds like a weird option, to disable Multicast Services, but I think the service it provides is sending and receiving Multicast through the modem to the internet.  It may be that you are bogging down your router and internet connection, sending your multicast traffic not just to your Etd but also forwarding to the internet.  Your service provider more than likely just drops it, so it isn't really going anywhere.  I think you can disable the service and not affect anything you are doing on the internet and it should still work between your PC and the internet.

However, no guarantees.  The documentation I can find from Motorola about your modem and configuring it is next to worthless when you get into any of the more advanced configuration options.  But, give it a shot and see if it helps.  You can always turn it back on if it causes a problem.

Still sounds to me like your modem is having an issue with multicast traffic. Like it is trying to process the multicast and pass it through and that is causing other devices to lose internet connectivity. Do your wireless devices still show a strong connection, they just can't get internet access?

Title: Re: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: Ron on November 19, 2012,
I'm not saying there is a problem with the modem, just a configuration issue. The symptoms point to an issue with the modem handling the multicast traffic. When you have the Etd on you 1. lose internet access on your wireless devices but they have a good signal and 2. you cannot access the configuration screen for the router. Both these point to an issue with the router being overloaded on the internal network side.  But it shouldn't be doing anything with the traffic.

The issue you run into with two NICs in your computer is telling your operating system which NIC to forward multicast traffic out. It sound like maybe it is forwarding out both, but that there is still some routing issue.

Did you power cycle the modem/router after you made the multicast change?  Again I cannot find any good documentation on the advanced configuration options for your router/modem.
Title: Re: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: chrisatpsu on November 19, 2012,
i think to get by.  your best bet is to assign an ip address for the 2nd nic   (add ip address, and subnet mask, but no gateway or dns addresses)

then in that link i gave a while ago, set the priority of the 2nd nic above the 1st.

(remember on that step, where you don't see the advanced menu, to press ALT for the menus to come up)

NOTE: by setting the priority of the 2nd nic first, then multicast will attach to that nic,  also, by not assigning a gateway, then you "route" for the internet becomes the 2nd nic.  ( i think we can tweak some more stuff on the 2nd nic that aren't needed, but we need to get into that configuration first.)
Title: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: Ron on November 20, 2012,
Maybe we can force multicast to the non Internet NIC by adding a route in the route table. Can you capture the output of a "route print" command from a Command prompt? That would show us how your traffic is set currently.

Do you have an IP address configured on each NIC?
Title: Re: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: rdebolt on November 20, 2012,
Thanks for the help guys. No at this time I do NOT have an ip assigned to either network card. I do know how to do that, but I don not know how to do the rest of what you are asking about. Setting the ip is easy, but does it really matter what it is? For example I did have the second nic set to 192.168.2.25. Is a number like that ok?
Title: Re: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: chrisatpsu on November 20, 2012,
it your router is on 192.168.x.x    then i'd probably set the ip address of the nic for the etherdongle as 10.0.0.5  to make it clear enough to not be confused.

like
IP 10.0.0.5
subnet 255.255.255.0
gate:  leave blank
dns1/2  leave blank
Title: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: Ron on November 20, 2012,
What Chris suggests is a good idea to keep it simple. I'd probably set to 10.0.0.1 to be real simple. Then get to command (DOS for the old guys like me) prompt by doing a RUN then CMD. When you get the command prompt type ROUTE PRINT, the enter. Copy that output and post here.
Title: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: Ron on November 20, 2012,
I hit send too soon. Tough working on my iPhone.

OK, after you get the NIC that you want to connect to the Etd setup with an IP address you can add a route that says send all multicast traffic through that NIC. Assuming you set the NIC to 10.0.0.1, enter the following at a CMD prompt.

route -p ADD 239.255.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.255 10.0.0.1

After you enter that it should save a route for all multicast traffic to an Etd to be out your 2nd NIC. Hopefully that will keep excess traffic off of your Internet subnet.
Title: Re: Setting Modem for Etd?
Post by: rdebolt on November 20, 2012,
So question with that is in my LSP setup I still want it to go to network 2 correct? AND in Xlights there is no choice so I guess I need to do all of this on Network 1 for Xlights to work and put my Internet Modem on the second nic. That is the problem for me throwing too many things at it and everything is set up differently. SO After thinking for a moment....
Should:
1. I use Nic 1 (in LSP Network 1) and change those settings within Network 1
2.  Connect internet to Nic 2?

When I had the internet connected to Nic 2 I had very noticeably slower internet. Will changing those settings affect that as well?

SORRY for being such a PITA!!!

I'd leave the internet on 1 since that works best. Change LSP to work with NIC 2. Put the new address on NIC 2 and add the route statement and see how it works. You weren't seeing any issues with xLights before so I don't there will be any issues there. Are you still testing with LOR too?

Xlights does not shut down the internet, but I cannot get Xlights to run on Nic 2. There is no setting that I can find within the setup to select which network. I have a question for that in the Xlights threads, but have not received an answer yet.

I own LOR V3.8 With all of my problems last year I wanted options so my primary sequencing and test software is LSP. I was just playing around with the LOR software and it did the same as LSP.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in xlights you configure the multicast address of the Etd.  After you add the IP address and route statement we are telling your PC to send any traffic for the Etd out NIC 2 so it should work. You are directing traffic at the IP level and do not have to change anything in the xlights setup.

Ok, 2 things. First did you set the 2nd NIC to address 10.0.0.1?  It doesn't look like it. I don't see it in your route table and it should be there.

Second, it looks like you need to run CMD.exe as Administrator to not get the elevation error in windows 7. In the search window for windows type CMD.exe. The result should come up under programs. Then you can right click it an select Run as Administrator. Then you should be able to get the ROUTE command to work.

I'm running LOR S3 3.8 on XP and have tested the ED direct and through my switched network.   I guess I was lucky because I setup the addresses in LOR and the way it went.  I can even shutdown the  listener on one machine and start it up on my laptop and the way it goes.

Everyone has internet access and I can access the internet from the machine while its running even downloaded a large file for testing.  I haven't run wire shark but so far nobody is complaining and the show is testing good now.  Luckily I have fiber to the house and no modem.

Keeping my fingers crossed I don't have any network issues.  I'm thankful for people who eat/sleep and drink this IP stuff.

OK I hate to open this up again, BUT with the nic card set the way it is.... It does not see the Conductor now. I have been testing for well over a week with the Etd and now that I have gone to the Conductor it shows not connected in the Conductor utility. And yes I have everything set on my cf card under 8 characters. show and schedule built ect. ect. Now what?

How is the Conductor connected to your network?  Any differently than the Etd was?

It should be using the same address as the Etd was, so it doesn't make sense that it would not communicate.

All I did was move the cables from the Etd to the conductor. It must be looking for some kind of a signal that it is not getting with the second nic. If I move the input cable to my modem on nic 1 it connects instantly putting me right back to square 1 with the internet.

ok...  NOW that you are on the conductor...  you don't need the 2nd nic anymore  <fp.

the conductor doesn't send or receive multicast message, just a heartbeat to the slave, and communication to the control panel software.

to do a quick test, you could now plug it into the home network to see that you can access it.
I'm assuming that it's connecting to the Etherdongle using a different method than multicast, which was the route added to your 2nd nic. all other traffic should be on the first nic (the ED control panel hould be part of this other traffic)

Looking back at some information I think Chris is right.  When you are using the Conductor you should not be flooding your network with Multicast so you can hook it up to your normal network and you shouldn't have any internet connectivity issues.  Basically the Conductor doesn't need the multicast like the Etd did, it just sends information to your PC for the control panel and a single packet heartbeat out for the slaves to sync with.

Try it on your regular network and see if you can see it in the control panel software and your wife is happy with the internet speed.

Well after the intial try it ran one song in my show and did not affect internet!  ;D  <res. But now I may join some others with another issue. There were 3 songs in that show and it quit after the first one.

Hey guys still having a problem here!!!! To make a long story short if I take the CF card out of the Conductor.... Yes Conductor...I will loose connection with the modem totally. By that I mean not lights at all from Cat5 input jack. If I plug mit into a different port on the back of the modem it will come to life again. This happens EVERY time. I still think that at least part of my isssue is in my network, but I don't know what the Conductors need in the network. I do have a post in the Conductor area, but I wanted to ask you here since you guys have been so helpful!

First I am using this thread because it has all of the information for what has already been done!

Ok guys I am back to trying to get this to work the way that I think it should. I think that I need to reconfigure everything back to square 1 and start over. See Diagram.

Here is what is happening right now.

Wired as per diagram: If I unplug the cat5 out of Nic 1 all lights and conductor work fine. As soon as I connect the Cat5 in Nic 1 I get internet back and no lights out of Etd (using Xlights and that is what I want to use). I have Nic 2 as priority network in Win 7.

Note: If I run everything through Nic 1 as soon as I run any lights (Not conductor of course) We loose all internet. Any help MORE help would be greatly appreciated!

I'll admit that I didn't go back through the whole thread (too long), but when you remove the CF card from the conductor, it won't talk any better than it would if you don't have the configuration files on the CF card with it plugged in.

If the conductor software doesn't see a properly setup CF card in the socket, it just doesn't do much.

Thanks for the help, but this has nothing to do with the conductor (working fine). Main problem is when running lights through Etd we loose all internet.

OK.  As I said, I didn't go back through all 7 pages. :)

My wireless network seem unaffected by Multicast traffic. I'll just consider myself lucky. My wife would not like losing her iPad connection.

Rick that may be. The pci nic card is just one that I have had for years. The other is a Realtek, but it is part of my motherboard so I cannot change that one. I guess that I could install 2 new non Realtek pci nic cards. I am just wondering if my "now" issue has something to do with what Ron had me do on post #71 of this thread. I don't know networking at all! OBVIOUSLY! <fp.

I was looking at your diagram and Why use the cisco router at all on the lights side just plug your ETD into your computer and elimated one possible point of problems. Worst is you would need a cross over cable if your computer is real old.

That's the way I had it the very first time. For some reason Xlights always wants to go through the Nic connected to the internet. I have switched cables to the Nics and the same thing happens every time. I would like to use the Ciso, because I have both my Etd and Conductor going to it so when I want to go from one to the other all I have to do is change the cable to my test hub. I have both my conductor and edt mounted so changing the cable on them is not quite as easy. Just being picky I guess,

NOTE: Right now the way my diagram is, I have no lights at all out of the Etd. All I have to do is disconnect the Cat 5 to the Motorola and everything works.

Computer is actually 1 year old (self built) but the pci Nic card is old. Just one that I had lying around. I think that I am going to go buy a new one and see what happens.

When I get desktops for work, I never trust the motherboard nic. I suggest you get TWO new nics of the same kind so you do not have to use the one on the motherboard. I use Intel's. If space is a problem, get a two port card. I have never had good luck with the nics on the motherboard.

After doing some thinking....and that is very scary....am I not going to need more ports when the Slave firmware is done?

Depends how you do it. I use the cheap little wireless units to create a network for just that stuff alone. that way I can setup my wifi on my android phone to control it as well as my computer.

Knowing the network expert that I am.  <fp.  I tried that and could not get it to run, but I do think that I have a bad Asus module.
