Need suggestions - LED snowflake on roof
« on: September 12, 2011, »
Hi guys,

I have some LED snowflakes that I got from Home Depot a while back and was wanting to try them out this year. They have several LEDs inside them, are made with a plastic shell the LEDs can shine through and are very light weight and are approximately 1 feet across and about an inch thickness. I wanted to spread them out across the roof. Trouble is it can get very windy here and was wondering if anyone had an ingenious way to make sure there they stay put on the roof. I was thinking about this but honestly can only come up with some sort of a combination shingle tab/ fishing line arrangement since my roof is 3 tab shingles. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Leon

One idea would be to use the black plastic fence material you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot, etc. Attach the snowflakes to it and then secure the fencing to the roof with rope or fishing line. The fence will keep the snowflakes where you want them.

I use shingle tabs with mine, but I live in the south and don't get much snow.  Wind has not seemed to bother them.  I have 14 of them and a fairly shallow roof.

I have 28 snowflakes on my roof.

Use the shingle tabs also without any problems.

They where connected 3 per channel in groups across the roof.

Last year we had a major snow and nothing happened to them. Used them for three years now.

Kept them right on the roof, not propped up.

I did the same and no issues - Same Weather and Area

Thanks to all for the responses.

Not sure yet how I would use shingle tabs with the fishing line... you guys have any pics how you tied em down using shingle tabs?

Rick,
Your idea using the fence falls in that category of genious.  :)  I'm gonna do some research on that one.  Thanks!

I run the electrical cord down from the roof peak where the cord is zip tied to my ridge vents.  That keeps the snowflake from sliding down the roof.  The shingle tabs are put around the cord and maybe in two or three places (depending on size of the flake) on the snowflake wire frame to keep it from moving in the wind.  Works great, been doing this for 3 years.

Another genious idea. Jim, I assume then that the controller is on the backside of the roof and the power cords are routed as you suggested?

You are correct the controller is on the backside where it can not be seen from the street.  It is running wireless and the power feed is from a deck outlet in the back of the house so I get another outlet I can tap into.  I bought a couple more snowflakes to add this year so I'm going to have to put up one LE and one SSR4 to give me enough channels.  This is the one place where making my own extensions from spt2 and vampire plugs has really worked for me.  Everywhere else all my controllers are usually within 9ft of the light strings they control.

Once I started buying mine this way I haven't turned back.   ;D
