Title: A new square 1804 5050 module with 3 wires ?
Post by: taybrynn on April 10, 2011,
This looks like a new item at Rays store.

A (4) 5050 square module.

Would these be SS compatible?

The module appears to ue the 1804 chip which is compatable with the smart strings chip.

I'd be tempted to ask Ray if its really got 3 wires as the picture shows.

For only $2 more, it gets your (4) 5050's instead of (3) ... and probably more power consumption as well.

It doesn't have the wiring standards est. by RJ for SS ...

I'm ordering a set just to check them out.

If it is using the 1804 chip, it is using the same chip that the strings do - I don't think there is really any custom programming other than the order the colors are physically wired... The only question is whether it is set for high speed, low speed, or can handle both. I think all of our stuff is set for high speed (800KHz data rate), but the strings seemed to work OK with the controller I have in low speed mode. The rigid strips need high speed. Low speed uses a 400KHz data rate. From testing done on other forums, there seems to be a pretty wide tolerance that these chips can accept...

If you order some, let us know how it works.

I got these modules and tested them with the TH2010-X controller.  They work great and are VERY bright.  They are wired   Red / Pos+    Yellow / GND-     Green/DIN1

You need to limit the number you put on a controller or you will damage stuff.

Definitely agree.

I have measured Milliamps while running them, but I'm not sure how to come up with an estimate, since it changes for every color you use.  It seams that white is the highest power use of all the colors.

RJ, did you measure power use based on white, or full R, G, B at 100% ?

I'd guess that these 4 (5050) square modules would use at least 33% more power than the 3 (5050) squares.

I'll try measuring milliamps used for 20 of these vs. 20 of the SS approved square (3x5050) modules.  Is that an accurate way to compare them?

Just measure one at full power (all on or white 100%)  and then keep the current under 4 amps.

Don't know why...but the 4 LED ones appeal more to me than the three....especially when outlining a house.    <;d
