Incandescent lights "Rule of Three"
« on: October 30, 2012, »
So I know the rule of three when it comes to stringing three sets of incandescent lights together (Generally 300 lights). What about icicle lights? The ones I bought from Home Depot are 300 count (2 sets of 150 lights). Can I string three boxes of lights together (900 lights) or will it that go  <md..

do you have a amp/watt meter? To see how much current they each draw?
Does the instructions that came with the lights say how many you can string together?
I am sure each plug as a fuse in it so it won't go up in smoke.
How are you controlling these light? (i.e.: LE, etc)

I have a meter and will test them. The instructions are very vague. I will be controlling them with an LE.

what is the "rule" of three?

Option 1:
 - (3) 100 mini incandescent lights equals 1 amp

Option 2:
 - When take a picture you want the subject at one of the intersection of the thirds line. for better framing.

I think in this case its option 1

There is nothing on the box of the Icicle lights stating not to string more then three together. That's why I was curious if I could string three sets of 300 lights (900 lights total) together without blowing the fuse. I guess I will just hook them up in the garage and see what happens.  >:D

Not every box. The ones from Walgreens had a higher number. I want to say it was 7, but i don't remember.

You forgot option 3.

Option 3: for every one foot of distance of the sound source from the microphone the next mic mist be 3 x the distance away to prevent bleeding between mics.

On the box it should tell you how many icicle light strings you can connect in series. It is required that information be there by UL.

The 22gage or so wire can't handle a whole lot of current is why the limitation, just in case you aren't a power person.
