What type of solder
« on: January 25, 2012, »
What type of solder do you prefer?  I am picking up all the loose ends to build and didn't realize there were so many different kinds.  Thanks for any input.

Quoted from the WIKI

"You need solder so buy some. I recommend .032 size (0.8mm or 0.7mm) as the larger sizes tend to cause you to put too much solder on. How much? Go ahead and get a 1 lb spool as it’s cheaper in large volume and you will go through it faster than you think. Make sure you are getting rosin core for electronics they make some solder for plumbing that has acid as the core this is a bad mistake to make. "

I prefer 63/37 (eutectic) solder over 60/40, and really hate the unleaded stuff...

I prefer .032 60/40 ... get a big spool and you won't run out for a long time.

+1

Go ahead and get the 63/37 if you have not gotten anything yet as it is a bit easier to work with.

I use .032 DIA  60/40 lead solder.  I also have some .015 DIA  63/37 that I use on surface mount devices.  For the equipment here the .032 is fine.
