Title: New stuff from creator of SuperStar sequencer
Post by: Steve Gase on January 15, 2013,

The following videos were very interesting.

There are some cool effects in the videos, and one video covers the assembly of his mega pixel tree with a smart pixel sphere as a topper for the tree, and also an alternative to the pvc tubing that we've discussed.

Really Nice. And i thought i finally decided on how to construct my future RGB Mega Tree.

Looks very nice!

It shows how you can get really good sequencing without the need for large string counts.

If enough people plan on building a sphere, ill add it into the targets of Nutcracker.

Also, many effects i saw in the video i would like to add the the current effect library.

I'm seriously considering the sphere.  I like that it takes on multiple personalities during the full sequence... extending the tree effects with vertical effects, then doing horizontal effects at other times.

This could make "stitching" tree and and sphere effects more challenging... but your project-based approach in nutcracker might be just the ticket.

I'd consider the sphere if I could find where that plastic sphere came from.

That's a cool idea and fairly easy to implement.

Even if you didn't use it in a three. I'd probably add all four pixels on the top and bottom thought.

I like the text effects on his tree.

Here is one place, I am sure there are others. http://plastic-domes-spheres.com/plastic-domes/
This is the place he got his from: http://www.edee.com/Acrylic%20Hemispheres.htm

The second link shows
0136-WH   White    18.00"    36.00"    $295.00

$295 for a half hemisphere. $600 for a 3' sphere. I think i would make a frame out of wire or out of 1/2" irrigation pipe. It is 100' for $10. I made my 12' Halloween spider from pvc pipe and irrigation pipe.

There would be some incentive to engineer a sphere at a lower cost.

Sphere does look cool.

Here, I was thinking of using a salad bowl from the dollar store. :)

how much would a tree like this cost for the pixels and hardware without the spear

Guess two R2D2s

But I like your idea also

He said there are 24 strings each with 25 pixels. This  probably means he is using 12x50 CCR's. Those are $250 each. So $3000 for the tree, another $500-700 for the sphere.

If you did it DIY

128 nodes string
http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/128-node-LED-pixel-string-DC12V-input-new-model-IP68-TM1804IC/701799_495658226.html?_componentAcceptorEnabled_=false
$50 each, fold into two strands of 64.
$600 and about $200 in shipping = $800

1 Lynx etherdongle $100
1 active 16 port hub $100

You should be able to build about the same tree for $1000

Nice effects! I like the sphere a lot. With a half tree, would a half sphere (facing forward) suffice, or would it look weird?

you are right, but price is still about the same $240 for 50 pixels

I have a half tree, but is visible from 270 degrees. I would use a full sphere on my half megatree

A little to rich for me. Very pricey.

According to his video he used a 12" hemisphere but said he should have used the 14" hemisphere which is 36.90 (x2) even if you went with a 24" one it is $85.00 (x2) it is only when you go over the 24" boundary that the price jumps because of the size of the machine needed to do the larger sizes.

2 14" white hemispheres  $73.80
1 string of 100 Pixels       $66.36 (cheaper if bought with other items)
1 Smart String Controller $10.04(plus shipping depending on coop amounts)
     Sub total                   $150.20
Plus figure another $30 to $40 in other materials  and you have a sphere....

Thanks for the feedback Sean. I'll plan to do that.

are they glass?  you'd need to drill holes for the lights.

If they don't split in half how would you get the lights inside. Is the hole large enough to get your hand inside?
Title: Re: New stuff from creator of SuperStar sequencer

Yes the hole is about 4" in diamater. Im sure it wouldnt be the same build process but the outcome might be the same.

I was playing with Google SketchUp and came up with the following for a possible design for an 18" globe.  I only placed the LED layout on the top half right now but the bottom would be the same.  The first 3 rows each have 24 pixels and the top row has 12.

Nice Job Todd

But why does it remind me of the Death Star in construction  ;D

I sent an email to the gentleman who made the tree and the sphere asking about the plastic sphere parts. Below is his reply.

Rick S

I bought the hemispheres from Edith Aiken Company:
http://www.edee.com/Acrylic%20Hemispheres.htm (http://www.edee.com/Acrylic%20Hemispheres.htm)
I bought two of the 12.00" diameter white. Request a 1/2 inch flange around the edges

Also, it is important to have a 1/2 inch drill bit that is made for acrylic plastic or else you will probably chip or crack the acrylic plastic while drilling the holes.
I bought mine from ePastics at: http://www.eplastics.com/Plexiglass_Lexan_Plastic_Drill_Bits (http://www.eplastics.com/Plexiglass_Lexan_Plastic_Drill_Bits)
You can also buy the drill bit from TAP plastics: http://www.tapplastics.com/product/supplies_tools/plastic_tools_supplies/tap_plasdrill_bits/161 (http://www.tapplastics.com/product/supplies_tools/plastic_tools_supplies/tap_plasdrill_bits/161) -Brian Bruderer
