Title: SSR4 with EXRX
Post by: jnealand on April 18, 2011,
V2 EXRX with and SSR4 - I am aware of the potential power draw by installing the LEDs.  If I leave the LEDs off can I also leave off the 33 and 82 ohm resistors?

I could use 4 of my V1.2 EXRX but I would have to remove the module connectors and possible raise the voltage regulator.  Seems like it would be easier to just leave off the LEDs and associated resistors when building new EXRX V2.

I also have one new v1.2 pcb and I assume the parts are the same except for the LEDs and associated resistors.

It seems like this issue of power draw should be added to the EXRX manual.  I know that it came up in the 2010 season for a couple of folks who were apparently maxing out the SSR4.

If you want to be a beta tester build one of the V2 with this regulator

Instead of the 7805. This is a low drop out version and may solve the issue. I was going to test it out but have not had time to yet.

If you do let me know what you find.

The parts are the same as you said on the older version.

I'd be willing to test it, but I have no plans to order more parts from Mouser and it probably would not be much of a test since I use mostly LEDs and have low bulb counts on my incan strings.  I was just wanting to build EXRX for my next 4 SSR4s and thought I'd build them such that if I sold the SSR4s off in the future, they would be fine for someone with a heavier power demand.  I still need my question answered.

Can I leave off the two resistors if I leave off the LEDs?

Just be aware that the temp range for the beta replacement  is 0 deg centigrade  (32 deg F) ...  may not a greart option for those in freezing climes...   For those in Florida...  no harm as they seldom get down to freezing    ;D

Good catch moose I should have looked harder.  I will find one with the right specs when I get a chance and try it.

would that be another example of be careful when trying to sub out a part?   ;D

Yes, yes it would.
For those of us wearing shorts at Christmas, it would not have been a problem - at least for most years...

RJ,

Have you had a chance to do any testing on this?  I live in a warm climate and am willing to try the replacement part since it should work:)  but was wondering if you found a better option before I order.

Mike.

The L4941 looks like it is rated at the lower temps.

This restart of an old post of mine that got hijacked reminds me that the original question never got answered.  If I leave off the LEDs can I leave off the associated resistors.
