Title: Do I need a Pickit?
Post by: Voltorb on October 02, 2012,
I have a Dataman 48Pro2 Universal ISP Programmer.  Is there any reason I can't use it instead of a PickIt?

Does it have a ICSP cable (6 pins)?

If not then you won't be able to program the etherdongle since its a smd pic that comes attached to the pcb

The PDF that lists all the supported devices for that unit (and it's big) includes these lines for the PIC model that is used on the EtherDongle:

Microchip PIC32MX795F512L [TQFP100 12x12] DIL40/TQFP100-1 ZIF PIC-1
Microchip PIC32MX795F512L [TQFP100 14x14] DIL40/TQFP100-2 ZIF PIC-1A
Microchip PIC32MX795F512L [XBGA121] BGA-1354/0970 = BGA-Bottom-209 + BGA-Top-103 ZIF-CS
Microchip PIC32MX795F512L (ISP-2wire JTAG) Note: via ISP connector
Microchip PIC32MX795F512L (ISP-4wire JTAG) Note: via ISP connector
Microchip PIC32MX795F512L (ISP-2wire JTAG-ext.VDD) Note: via ISP connector
Microchip PIC32MX795F512L (ISP-4wire JTAG-ext.VDD) Note: via ISP connector

Not sure if the "ISP connector" they reference would be compatible with the ISCP connector on the ETD. Then you'd have to figure out if that programmer can read in the hex firmware files we use with the PICKIT. I suspect you'll have to do some research on your side.  Might be easier to spend the short money to pick up a PICKIT3.
