DMX controlled Strobe control board
« on: August 24, 2010, »
Does anyone know of a DIY DMX strobe light control board.  I have some old......(disco days) "Lightwave products" Data flash strobes.  These are big and real bright.  They are controlled on a non DMX RS-485 network using "lightwave protocol".  Many years ago a DMX to Livewave convertor was made but can't find any now.  Any thoughts?

suggests Lightwave makes a DMX ready flash unit already.
There appears to also be a 'self test' mode, where the unit fires when power is applied,
so just connect it to a controller and have sufficient prefire time programmed into the channel to get it to fire exactly when you want it to.

Alternatively, connect a small wall wart to a channel and use the DC output to drive a reed relay to close a contact on the 'manual fire' button or port. (or you have to add one by hacking the unit).

Have you contacted the company to see if they will disclose the old protocol?
Seems that it shouldn't be too hard to program a PIC to translate from a DMX channel to old 'lightwave'.
