Permanent Exterior RJ45 Jacks
« on: December 22, 2012, »
Hi All

So I am debating putting in some permanent exterior RJ45 jacks in my back yard.
I plan to dig it up anyways to runs some electricity to a shed, and water lines for the garden.
While I have holes dug and a ditch witch, the thought occurred to me to run some Ethernet for Smart Strings.
So I can keep a few strands out back for a few months during the summer when we like to grill out and stuff.

So, has anyone else done this? What type of hardware did you use?

FYI, yes I will keep the mains voltage and low voltage in a different PVC conduit.

yes!

I have several Cat5 runs to various places in my yard.  they all go back to a cat5 data patch panel
this year I am using them all for DMX, Ethernet, Serial for sign, Serial for projector control.

I have mine in standard outdoor boxes with a plastic keep dry cover

as we remodle our house, I've been adding a pixelnet network jacks in each room. all leading to a patch panel in the basement.
I'll plan to do the outside jacks as well.

Got any pics to share, are your sockets just loose in the outdoor covered box?

I will take a picture or two.  Lowes has a standard "decora" plates that hold multiple Cat5 jacks.  These plates will then fit standard electrical boxes either flush or surface and the standard keep dry covers.
