Just a heads up if you didn't know. I was waiting for a Northern Tool sale to get mine. Fixture itself appears to be identical to the Northern Tool one. More pleasantly surprised I could find them in stock at my small town's location.
-
I got 4 Northern Tool ones and were like the ones in the Wiki, different than one pictured online. I paid 7.99 + a little shipping and just checked they are 9.99 now. However I'm happy with the fit.

I used this fixture for both of mine. Worked/fitted just fine.

Do you have a model # from the box I could use for identification? Thanks !!

I just want to make sure, did you put an your Aether in it or are you just speculating that these are the same?
-
Haven't built mine yet but PJNMCT did successfully use this fixture for his in this thread: http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=9093.0 (http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=9093.0) Twooly said he used these for his in this thread too.
Sorry I didn't provide more detail in my post. I will update when I build mine. To be honest, I still had to tweak the heatsink for the aether II's I built last year using the RJ certified Northern Tool fixture. So I expect a little tweaking on these too.
-
They worked great. Heat sink fit right in. Little hard getting all the wiring in but it went in :)
-
Decided to see it for myself. Tore one apart and tested the fit of the heatsink. Fits perfectly!
-
Great! Thanks for the info.

Note,
Please do not use plastic cases. The metal of the case is a big part of the heatsink. You will run your led to hot and shorten it's life by a large amount. I do not know if any of the cases you guys are posting are plastic but if so I recommend you do not use them.

These mentioned so far are not plastic.

Yep. It's metal. Pretty sure it's aluminum. The cheesy handle is plastic though. Chucked it and the stand since I will be making custom mounts for mine.

Has anyone tried this light

Not I, but I believe the 250 watt units are too small...just an opinion nothing more.

Yea to small.

Congrats on the deal....I think "small town" may have been the key to finding these $5 lights. They are closeouts and every location within 70 miles of me has been sold out out of them for a while now.
I have guts for 4 more Aethers built, but no housings yet. The Harbor Freight version seems to be priced way high this year @ $13.99. I can't even bring myself to dish out $9.99 for the Northern Tool...so I'll be waiting for one of them to go on sale.
-
Wow. I guess I lucked out. Last year I waited a bit and found a $5 off code for Northern Tool near start of light season. I wasn't planning using my aethers last year but I was happy I did pull it off.
-
It's really hit or miss in my area I have 3 home depots in a 30 mile radius and only one had them but it wasn't in with the rest of them they were stuck in a seasonal area
-
I found six here in AZ; only need 5. I went through the website to order them there, and pick them up in the store. Hopefully they can find the units by the time I stop by this afternoon.
-
Similar experience. I would (cringe) call, I was glad I did. Site showed 1 in stock but there were probably 6 there.
-
I can't find any in stock, except 2 in this distant city, 2 other is another distant city. I guess I'll just check the store myself and hope I get lucky. Whats the cheapest online source for these outside of HD?

Home Depot will often have the items -- but will also be unable to find them in the store. They told me during a similar search 3 months ago that they have these enclosures listed as seasonal items, and therefore they get placed and stored at odd places throughout the store.
Their inventory may be correct, but they may not find them near the other worklights -- so have them look with the "seasonal" items is my suggestion.
Also, look for stores beyond your extended area. I found one store in San Antonio had about 64 of these items. The cost to have them shipped to me, or to a local store was prohibitive -- in the end I paid a little more and went with northern tools. BUT, you might be able to drive 90 minutes for another activity and find what you are looking for.
-
The sotre called me and said they did not have them. I will go in myself and look for them. If I find them I will buy what they have and let everyone know. I only need 5 of them.
Lazy employees......
<md..

Although it's nice to save few bucks, it might not be advantageous to everyone to drive 30 miles to store to pick up these fixtures. For a minute I thought about grabbing the rest for some of you but then I realized shipping would negate the cost advantage.
I think Northern Tool is next best deal out there ($10). http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200309783_200309783 (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200309783_200309783) IIRC shipping charges were reasonable and not inflated.
-
I agree.
I considered travelling to SA before the Academy and bringing as many to the Academy as my car would hold... but I feared that I'd be left with a car load of worklights. :)
Carrying them through the airport on a return trip, or sending them by mail would not justify the extra couple dollars one might save... IMO.
-
I found several locations in the Los Angeles area that have these in stock. I may check a few out next week while out there.
-
They need to ship them out to Texas.
-
I just noticed that Home Depot website shows these available in stores only (not online).
Do these look like they would work? They are 500 watt and similar to the others I've seen used.

The HD in Orange Park, FL had 25-50 of them in stock. I skipped them because it seemed that people where saying they might not work properly.
-
What was wrong with them? I'm tempted to buy one and just see how it works.
-
I have two and they work fine. I had to tweak the heat sink ever so little. They work as well as last years model.

Thanks.
I just got one tonight and the heat sink seems to fit rather good.
-
Has anyone used the HD lights? Did they work properly?
-
I didn't have time to build my aethers but the size was perfect
-
They have a lot of them in stock now. I was thinking about getting them just because it is easy to get them. I'm just concerned about the heat issue.
-
If they're the same one's in my link, I used them for 2 and have no issues. Truthfully, the heat sink fit better in these than the northern tool fixture I used for those I made last year. Not sure what you mean about "the heat issue".
I might grab a few since I plan to add more aethers next year. Thanks for the heads up. They still $5.88?

I'm acutely aware RJ was concerned about plastic cases when he said this. But I just wanted some real world use from someone with the HD ones and they are not having issues that might be associated with heat.

These are in my area. Might get two for next year. http://m.homedepot.com/p/HDX-500-Watt-Portable-Halogen-Work-Light-WL500SP-H/203082160/

You just missed it... ;) They're aluminum. See pic on first page.

I knew they were metal casing, that's not really my question or issue.
RJ designed this based on Northern Tool . The Northern Tool might have a larger size, thicker metal, better heat dissipation, etc. I don't know and I bet no one one here does AND more importantly knows how each one of those factors might affect the Aether. So the best way to test the change in design (new HD case) is to test it.
Testing it involves putting it in a HD case, and seeing if there are problems.
So the question remains, has anyone used the metal HD casing and had problems with the Aether failing because of a change in design.
-
I am using these in my show now with success

I use the HD case for two years and I have zero issue. I also use them all year round. Including our hot New Mexico summers. I use them as yard lights on the house. I would say they will be fine.

For the past two years folks have use similar housings sold by Northern Tool, Home Deport, Lowes and Harbor Freight.
I personally have 4 Harbor Freight & 4 Northern Tool.
No one has had any issues performance wise that I'm aware of. The only issues were that some of the heat sinks had to be bent a little more to fit down low enough in the case. The concern here was to provide enough room for the LED lens and still let the cover tighten down properly to seal without breaking the glass.

I couldn't think of a better test for heat... But is DRY heat ;D
