Title: Brightness of 8mm straw hat vs. 5050
Post by: zwiller on January 17, 2013,
Doing some designing of some new elements and wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts about comparing of the brightness of the 8mm straw hat used in the strings and the 5050 led used in the modules/strips.  I don't need anything overly technical but my gut is telling me the 5050 is about 2x brighter than the straw hat.  Thoughts?

i tend to use rated wattage as guidance.  assuming that power is effeciently converted to light by LEDs, it would seem that more power should roughly equate to more light.

i may be all wet, however... :)

the 8mm rgbleds in the nodes are 3000mcd (all colors full on)

the 5050 rgbleds in the other items are 4500mcd (all colors full on)

So what does this mean :-)

the 5050 are brighter by spec.
but....

the resistors used might change that, as they both aren't getting 20mA as recommended in the specs of each.

I can't see them really being that far off from each other. I think it would be more about where the light is concentrated as using them for their use.

the 8mm leds are designed to be seen from a wider angle, as the 5050's are more direction focused..

Thanks guys.  Steve, you and I think alike...

Pretty sure I am going to convert to 2d rgb elements with these guys: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/RGB-5050LED-Module-1pcs-5050-SMD-RGB-DC12V-input/701799_518243139.html (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/RGB-5050LED-Module-1pcs-5050-SMD-RGB-DC12V-input/701799_518243139.html)  No drilling, a small dab of hot glue to affix and Bob's your Uncle...

Wait to you see what I have in store for arches...
