Since I'm cheap, i was wondering...

what would be a good low cost pole to use for a mega tree center?  alum elec conduit? and antenna pole?

what are your ideas?

I use 1 inch emt for our 20 foot tower for our Fm antenna. I use 1 inch metal pipe from a old 20 foot TV antenna mast i took down which i have it placed inside one of those green fence posts with a u bolt locking it in, so i can just unbolt it and pull the post over to put the star on top. And of course remember the 4 guy wires going to the ground. Ours is a flag pole of of season also.

I am very happy with my 16 foot spiral.  I have changed 2 things this year.  I changed the pole to 3 inch pvc and added guy wire along with the rope.  This makes it VERY strong!  I used the rope in addition to the guy wire so my nylon ties would have something to bite into.  Webber said his slipped down somewhat during the ice and wind.  With the rope to hold the ties from slipping and the guy wire for strength, it is one tough tree.  To put the lights on, I put it on its side and prop the top on a small ladder or chair.  Then the highest point to reach is only 6 foot off the ground.

10 ft. EMT here.  1 1/4" and then using a "coupler" from holidaylightshow.com (I think it was) I used another 5 ft. section to make my tree 15 ft. total height.  It's been up for a couple of weeks now and with the wind we just had no problems.

4 guy lines are attached too.  I also ran line from the top to the base for each string of lights for support etc.  This also gives it that much more support.

The EMT was around $10 per at Home Depot.  The guy lines etc. are black paracord that I had already.  Being it a 1000 ft. roll I could spare a few feet. lol

I used top rail fence post for two years.  Now I've moved the Monkman JUMP pole.

This is the one that I built.  It is very sturdy and I have a 2 foot star on top.  We had 40 mile an hour winds a few nights ago with no problems.  It also comes apart very easily for storage!

I did 4" PVC drainage pipe.  It worked great, no bending.  I only did 16' based on the length of my strings.

This year I am going higher, using 1-1/4" black pipe, but I am using a hoist to bring my lights higher.

I feel it depends on how many lights you put on the tree.
I use a 2" ID black steel pipe, extended to 25'. With a 16" topper with 19 hooks, 1,800 lb winch and 160 stings of lights. I bought one of the the 24" 3D stars years ago and because the tree has out grown the star, I added 5 strobe lights off the points. What a big difference. Video coming soon to my website.

kjam22,

Thanks for the link.  I decided to build my mega tree with this plan.  It worked out incredibly.  Much better than last year's mega tree.
