Having just returned from the Memorial weekend (plus a day), I too wish to thank those who have served our nation. As an Army brat, my family and their military service were an integral part of my youth, with Father, Mother, Uncle and Brother all serving various branches of the service.
A few year ago, I entered an embroidery (yes, embroidery) and a poem in our county fair, honoring all those who have served the United States of America; the poem follows:
Heroes
Each morning I rise from my overnight rest,
My thoughts quickly turn to America's best.
Young volunteers join, eager, brave and clear-eyed,
Serving our nation, with both honor and pride.
Our country began, with these patriot seeds,
Uncommon valor, our troops show with their deeds.
The White House decides, they go into harm's way,
They serve overseas, heading straight to the fray.
Mission accomplished, the come home good-hearted,
But heavy and broken, for comrades departed.
We honor their deeds, those who keep us all free,
Our mighty armed forces are heroes to me.
I offer these few, insufficient words to try and convey my awe, admiration, pride and deep gratitude for those who have served: past, present and future. The life I lead today is due to the service and sacrifice these extraordinary Americans have given to us all; these are truly America's best!
