i decided I'm going to stick with 5mm mini leds. I love there brightness and there small amperage.
I have used a lot of 5mm LEDs in my display. I perfer the look of a small, bright pinpoint of light over a C9 bulb. But I have found that for many projects a M6 works better. For example, the M5 just dose not look right in a wireframe. One of my projects for next halloween is a pumpkin face from Holiday Coro (You are not allowed to view links.

What I have been doing the last couple of years is just buying whatever LEDs I could get on clearance at the end of the year and then adjust the display to use what I have on hand.
I also Have started taking lights to the Academy and traded what I have for what I need. Last year i unloaded a bunch of LEDs and bought mini incandescents that I needed for a wedding. Then I sold the wedding lights on Craig's List for a small profit.
My point is that you will find that you end up using a lot of different lights as time goes on.
I think that the biggest advantage that incandescents have for a new guy is that you can get your feet wet with fairly low cost. Then as you learn more and get more knowledge and experience you will have a better idea as to what you want. Who knows, you may end up getting into pixel lights in a BIG way
