Mini trees from coroplast?
« on: April 24, 2009, »

At this point I have almost no experience with coroplast so as far as I'm concerned it can do anything.  Can anyone tell me if it can be bent evenly?  Can it be cut and rolled into a funnel/mini tree shape?  I know this would be somewhat more expensive than tomato cages but I like the idea of a non-conductor as a core.  Also a smooth solid surface would allow for many different light configurations.  Can anyone tell me if hot glue sticks to it pretty well?  Any other suggestions along this line would be appreciated.

I've seen some pretty amazing stuff made with coro, but I don't think it will bend at an angle like you would need for a cylinder.  It will bend round for sure.  Here are a couple of links for you to follow to read more about it.  They guy referenced in one of them, Anthony in Houston, does some amazing stuff with coro.  I saw the toy soldiers he made that were just incredible.  He's standing next to one in his forum picture on the PC forums.

Look at this project with coro too:

I've heard hot glue does not work well, but I haven't tried it myself.  Anthony, the coro guy, suggests a glue called handibond.  You can get it at:

I need to find some pictures of the coro soldiers, but at the moment I can't seem to locate any.

...you might want to use the "hooks" they show in the coro claw videos to put them together - See here You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Does anyone know where to get decently priced coroplast?

Anthony recommends Reece Supply in our area.  Not sure if there are any close to you.  I think it is:

Two places I have found are Sign Supply USA and Grimco.com.  Both are suppliers to sign companies.  I'm just lucky that one is only a mile from me and the other is about 6 miles.  I know that Grimco has locations all over the US, but don't know much about Sign Supply USA other than I bought stuff from them last year.  Current quote on 4x8 coro from Grimco just yesterday was $9.50 per sheet.  Next price break is at qty 250 sheets.

I made my micro trees out of 1/2 white pvc. The pipe and one fitting and screws cost me $2.09 per tree to make and they are really strong.

I did post about them last summer.

You should check out David's mini arches out of coro too.  They are very cool.

If a guy wanted to cut and make his own mini trees from the coro......

Do you drill the holes or is there a punch of some kind to make the holes for the lights to stick through?

Either way that is a bunch of holes.  Maybe that's why we buy them rather then make them?
