Title: Newb Question...When do Coops start?
Post by: Chrisbinparadise on January 10, 2013,
Yes, I am a newb on here, but therefore I am eager!  :)  When should I expect coops to start up?  Can a newb like me help organize one?  Otherwise, I would be happy to buy into one.

Just anxiously waiting down here...

Chris

There is no set schedule. It varies with demand, availability, and product releases. You can view the past coop forum to get an idea of what's been done in the past.

RJ is the person that selects people to be Coop managers and these people do a lot of work for us for nothing but admiration. Before a Coop is run RJ discusses with the managers what coop's are going to run and then the manager has to contact the different companies and confirm the prices and availability for parts as this is what gets us the great prices. So before a coop is run there has already been a lot of leg work and time put into it.

I would say that we will probably see at least 2 coop's run withing the next couple of weeks, Now the question would be are they going to be what you need?

Only suggestion is be patient and be ready to jump as the first coop's will open and close quickly.

Hi Chris,

Its not really good to post in the coop forum since most members are setup to get emails when a new post is posted there.

That beginning said, expect the first coop soon (I don't know when but its coming)

Also I am going to move this post to the public board so members don't get upset excepting a coop when its only a question about a coop

I checked a couple of times this morning... nothing. When I came back I was startled and a little worried when I saw that a coop had started and it was already two pages long.

31 in less than 49 minutes. I don't think this will make it until the 20th >.d9 <;d

If I were a newby I would be tempted to post in the coop forum. My question is about coops best place is in the coops. Maybe the forum could be locked as far as creating new threads.

Thanks all for your replies!  I learned a lot and then somebody started a Coop right after my post...sweet!

njKeever:  I looked at the past forums.  That was useful!  I didn't see a coop for an Lynx Freestyle last year.  Does anyone think there will be one this year?

sjb:  Good info...thanks!

rrowan:  You mean I am not the only one who set up to get notifications for co-op postings!?!   ;)  No malice was intended and I didn't see the question answered in the FAQ.  Thanks for putting my post in the proper place!

rdebolt:  Thanks!

dpitts:  Don't think you need to overreact to one incident.  If it is a persistent problem, then it probably needs to be fixed.  If it is an isolated incident, correct the one incident and no need to change anything administrationally.  MHO

Thanks again all!

Sincerely,
Chris

So why did I get notified about this post but not the real coop?  Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to miss any more.

Thanks.

well, if you don't want to miss the current one, then make sure you put in what you want. so many people think that b/c it's going to (in theory) end on the 20th, that they have until then to decide on what they want. many times the Express coops close within hours during the beginning part of the year.

In the Coop window up in the right hand corner there will be a box that you can select to Notify you in that area. Then anytime there is a change in the coops you will be notified.

We have already hit 100+ units in less than 6 hours.  I recommend anyone wanting to participate to get your order in soon.  There is a hard cutoff on 250 units.

I don't see your screen name in the "ordered" list, so just in case you (or others) are having an issue finding the group buy ....http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=11149.0 (http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=11149.0)

I currently have enough AC channels for now, so I won't be in on this one.

I have that selected. I was notified when the OP posted originally in the Coop forum but was not notified when the Coop went live. I don't need any AC channels right now, but don't want to miss a coop I'm waiting for. Does anyone have a clue why this happened?

I believe that it will only notify you once unless you go in and look at it, but I am not sure about that. I know that for me it is that way. It my be a setting in your personal preferences.

I did go look at it. I've since changed from a yahoo email to a gmail account. Maybe that will work.

That is odd. I actually get annoyed at times because it is going off so much. I have it set that way so I don't miss anything....which has sometimes backfired because it goes off so much sometimes I ignore it.  <fp.

What I'm wondering is why the current LE coop is still open.  Looks like in past years it has closed much faster.

I believe that it is because a lot of the existing members have been slowly going over to LED nodes or flexstrip and will be waiting for the smart string and hubs coops. This leaves the Lynx Express coop a little less competitive. IMHO

well, in the past it was limited to 100 units...  If that were the case now, it would have been closed by now.

It will be closed after tomorrow!  ;) I personally only ordered because I am slowly fading out my LOR controllers. I too am going RGB on everything new.

I think many people got their LE's last year. Kurt opened coop for 250. People are switching to RGB.

I have 6 LE's from last year. I used 3 of them, i may use the other 3 this year. I find that when using LE's, you need alot of spt2 cable. 96 channels, 96 cables. Setting up with SSC or DCS's and you pretty much are just running a few cat5 cables.

This last year I had 12,100 channels, 22 channels were LE, 12 channels were Aether II's, the rest were smart rgb,

i will continue adding mostly SSC and DSC devices this year. I may go over the 16K channel limit and need to get a second ether dongle. You do use up channels fast with RGB

thanks

I have gotten a lot of questions about why the Lynx Express COOP didn't close faster.  Jeez, do you guys really care how fast it closes?  What difference does 5 days make in a process that takes 3-4 months to complete.  I opened it up with a larger count level so that we can get everyone in that needs/wants a Lynx Express.  In the past, if you didn't get in within the first 100, you didn't get what you needed and had to wait 2-3 months before the next COOP.  I didn't like the fact that people were waiting on pins and needles to get into the COOP for fear of it closing within hours of opening.  Thus the bump in accepted counts to 250.  I think it is fair.

I am not complaining or angry or any other emotion you want to read into my message.  I am just explaining the rationale behind the 250 and for wanting to 'go the distance' as far as the close date.  I am sure other COOP managers will run things differently than I and will run things with the idea to close the COOP within hours of open.

I think the reasons this didn't close faster were due to -- as stated above -- people switching to RGB and the high accepted order count.  I am comfortable with this as the COOP manager as there are over 90 people who are in need and their needs will be met by the COOP.  That is good enough for me!

Kurt,

I appreciate your running yet another coop.  Excellent job, as usual -- and the large quantity of 250 was the right size to make sure that everyone that needs one has the opportunity.  Hopefully, plenty of extra PCBs and heat syncs will be created for the store -- I think having fewer coops is certainly an option if people get the chance to buy from the store throughout the year.

I agree with Sean, that many people are shifting to RGB.  I think the folks looking at LEs are newer people using store-bought strings, and converts from LOR looking to upsize their shows.  Also, like Sean, I purchased a number of LE kits and didn't use them all last year.  I have about 8 kits to assemble yet.

(But, because my wife likes arches, I plan to move my older strings of LED lights to become arches and will use nearly all of the LE controllers for that purpose in the coming year.)

Thanks, again!!

Steve,

I agree with you as well.  You can never have TOO many Lynx Expresses around.  I have 8 now and two that I have yet to build.  I used 6 this last year, when I expected to only use 4.  It is usually the spouse that drives my need to grab another Lynx Express and plug up an effect or connect another device.

RGB does make more efficient use of cabling (as Sean mentioned) so I too am switching over some of my elements to RGB dumb and smart strings.  My mega tree for 2013 will be smart strings (I used 32 strands of Lynx controlled light strings in 2012) and I am considering RGB 'dumb strings' for my 8 mini trees (which each use 4 strands of Lynx controlled light strings for RGBW) just so I don't have to use so many power cords (64 around the mega tree alone).  I am sure that the 4 lynx expresses that are freed up by this, will find some use elsewhere.

Ditto on having surplus LEs.  I bought 4 last year to expand to the side yard (corner lot).  But then I bought some smart strings and did not get around to creating the side yard.  Thought I would get to that this year and bingo I went to the Academy and my wife saw RJ's demo tree and said I want one.  So off to buy flexstrips and learn nutcracker.  And now with my original smart strings freeing up LE channels I have excess channels to spare on my original LE's.  But is sure is nice to have a spare, and maybe 2013 I will finally get to the side yard.

For those who don't understand here is a simple example.  Every window on my house used to have 3 strings of lights and use 3 channels and 3 extension cords.  Now all those channels are unused and there is only a single cat5 going to each window.  Not only that, but I can put the smart strings up for Halloween and leave them up for Christmas with only programming changes.

Kurt,

I am so happy that you are running this coop and the way you do it is perfect. If you had run it for 100 units, once again the coop would have closed within hours (I just counted!). Not everyone has the flexibility to jump in a coop when it opens. The way you run the coop gives plenty of times for people to get in.

Being said, I do not envy you with all the parts you are going to have to sort, pack and ship. What a enormous job! For me, there is no rush and you can take all the time you need as far as I am concerned!

Thanks again Kurt for doing all this work.
