Sandy related weather - Show stopper
« on: October 27, 2012, »
Not sure how everyone else is affected but my show is down now with the rain we have.  Each express has at least one channel stuck on if not more than one of various intensities.  I have people stopping to watch it tonight too.  Had to put up my weather audio to advise them it's not running tonight.  I've already pulled on express and now that it's dried out in the garage it's working perfectly.  Apparently I didn't weather proof enough again this year.  :'(

I've had more people stop for the Halloween show this year than last.  Depressing.

Well I turned on the one I had on the bench.  Same channel flickered for a bit then finally stopped.  And it's still in the garage!!!!!!!!!!  So these boards are sensitive to humidity!!!!!  To say the least...  Not good...  Dry environments they are great.  For us up here in the North not so great. :(

The board may be dirty which will cause them to be more sensitive to humidity.  I would give it a good cleaning.  Corrosion X would also be a good idea and will also stop that reaction to humidity.

That is something I do need to get.  But I'm sure alcohol would work and cheaper.

I just tried the board again. Channel flickered a few times then it was fine.

Conformal coating on these boards I'm sure would help if not solve these problems.  I'm gonna have to look into this.

My show is finished for Halloween (never really got it fully up).  Our out-of-town guests are stuck in DC with us through the storm.  *sigh*  I think Tuesday I will put some static display up but no blinky.

Sandy got my show also (refere to my warning post for a photo of the disaster) With the FL. GA game here in Jacksonville, I had to work all weekend. So tomorrow I will check to see if I can even  salvage my Coro faces and fix my broken tomb stones....  This was my first show with RGB elements. S3 to the Lynx dongle to 8 3 channel controllers and some Holiday Coro Spotlights. it looked good during testing.....at least I have my memories...

Tore my display down today.  Didn't want to chance my coro stuff getting damage anymore.  Sad too...

Had the most people stopping to watch the show this year.  Took hours to set up and less than 45 mins to rip it down and throw it all in the garage.

Sorry, to hear that.

All I know is that my families thoughts are with those that are going through this storm and we wish you all the best.

Dean, you don't mention what kind of enclosure your using. I have multiple expresses in CG-1500 cases, running for avg 2 1/2 months in FL thunderstorms and have never had the kind of problems you describe. The humidity is so high I've opened cases to to find condensation many times. Had some channels stuck one time, but it was across multiple expresses, so I unplugged the USB dongle, plugged it back in again and all was well. Next time it happens, unplug the dongle and see if it was really the LE stuck, or whether something else was still sending signal to the LE.

Same cases.

And I have not only unplugged but sent signals just to be sure.

The one on my bench is only plugged into the wall. No dmx. Still malfunctioning.

Alcohol is good for the cleaning, but distilled water works just as well. Just make sure the board is completely dry before applying power. If the dirt is stubborn, a mild tap water and soap solution can be used, but you have to rinse it very well and get all of the soap off. Then follow up with a distilled water rinse. (Tap water, as clean as it is, still has a lot of minerals and other chemicals in it that make the water conductive. Distilled water is a poor conductor - at least until it becomes contaminated...)

CorrosionX is not a cleaner, per say. It actually creates a coating on the board that repels water and dirt. You should check out their website...
