Question about test firmware and V2 SSC
« on: October 27, 2012, »
I'm building my SSCs today and I see test firmware for V1, but nothing listed for V2.  My assumption was that V1 SSC and V2 SSC use the same firmware?

If so, then I have an odd issue...  On 2 SSCs I've built, I've flashed with the test utility.  When I connect the SSC to the hub and to the lights, I get an initial flash (random colors), then nothing.  Any ideas here?  It does appear I'm sending power down the strand correctly, but after the initial flash, the string is as black as night.

To clarify, I've tested on two different sets of lights and two different SSCs.

First time I've had something like this that I can recall...

No V3 mod. V2 is what I'm working with.

DO NOT use the version 1 test firmware on a version 2 board.  Doing so can damage or destroy the PIC on a version 2 board.
If at first you don't succeed,

Ok, when nothing lit up, I unplugged. Thanks for the info, guys! I'll just setup as usual and go from there.

Both the firmware and test firmware for the v3 mod in the wiki, are linking to pages that have been removed, i.e. there is nothing there that can be downloaded.
The test firmware (for v3) is not out, at least as far as I know.
The firmware for v3 that is currently posted in the forum is short of a few bytes (13 bytes I believe), and will not upload correctly depending which tool you are using to flash the pic. I believe the correct checksum for it is 0xed60 (from memory, don't quote me, I'll correct the post if it is not the correct value) and if after loading it to whichever tool you are using to flash the pic, you see a different value, do not flash it. Instead use a different program to flash it, or load an older firmware first in memory (to set those missing bytes), then import the latest firmware.

The updated mod 3 info and firmware are here

I don't know if the wiki has been updated or not. I kinda wish they would have called the new v3 either v3.1 or v4 to avoid any confusion. The old v3 mod should not be done and the old v3 firmware and utility should not be used.

Thanks for taking that with you Ricky!  We did not want this one. We get more than our share. Good news is it is only a cat1. You ain't had a hurricane until you at least live through a cat3.  <fp.
