RGB Disco Floor?
« on: February 23, 2011, »
You guys have some really neat idea, with the north poles, mega trees, mini trees, etc...

Anybody have any good ideas for a light up floor material that you can walk on?

The floor can be illuminted through many many lights, but wondering about a diy idea for the actual piece you walk on.

I've seen this kind of thing before, it seemed like a clever setup, it appeared that there were 50cm*50cm floor panels with 12 leds in each I think wired in series of 3 so 4 channels per panel. The leds used were white. It looked like like maybe MDF or something painted black with holes drilled and the leds mounted flush with the panel. I'm guessing you could use led clips to hold them in or attach a piece of Plexiglas to the panel.

What I'm describing looked like a really nice effect and was a surprise as they were turned off until later on that evening.

Here's a disco floor that students at my alma mater built back in 2005.  This is a link to their project:

Turns out there was such interest in their project at the time, the students who created it started a little company to produce controller boards.  Not sure if the company still exists since their web site doesn't come up (You are not allowed to view links. they used 1/4" lexan.

i've found 1 inch acrylic too.

the more i think about this, the more i wonder about instead of making a floor...

maybe floor, and a wall, or even just a wall
The place i'd like to do this (man cave, wife wont let me touch the rest of the house  lol) it has a low enough ceiling that rasing the floor might cause issue. so maybe a matrix disco style wall.

I'm also thinking the Freestyle might come in handy for this...

I am curious why you would not want to put leds inside a glass block?  I have been pondering making some lighted stepping stones for my yard using 4 glass blocks in a square framed with cedar and then putting rgb leds inside them.

nice idea...   you could place two leds in the block,  one for the year round powered by solar panel kind of thing,

then one pixel of a smart string, so you could include it in the show.  8)
