Title: Design help please.
Post by: chrisatpsu on December 03, 2012,
ok, I'm only going to do 8 arches this year.

i plan on trying to have 9 illuminary trees. one for where each arch meets, plus one on each end. (9 total)

the illuminary trees have 3 plastic rectangles in each, and the trees are in a straight line about 8ft between each tree.

I want to try to get as many as I can per SSC.
electrically, i could run the entire line on one SSC as I'm well under the electrical requirements for one SSC
just wondering about the distance.
the entire span is about 64ft.

my questions...
8ft gap between trees, how many "not used" nodes should i place in between?
how many trees do you think would be safe on each SSC?
(i'm not worried about # of nodes per SSC, just overall distance i can run on the wire handling the data)

I would put one unused node in the middle of a 8 foot wire (between each tree). That would give you 4 foot between nodes.

how long do you think i can get out of the overall run before i start degrading the signal?

Each node regenerates the signal with about 6-8 foot max between nodes

Wondering if you will have to add power to the line or apply power each end

Let us know how it goes  :)

I was just talking to my dad yesterday about some north pole ideas for my house.  Thinking about just using one SSC but thought I would run into the problem of too long of a line in between nodes.  4 would be a guess I may just have to try it.

Couldn't he run a SmartHub, pixelnet Splitter or a 4 port passive hub to extend his hub to where needed?  (I would take this with a grain of  salt until we get verification from the true Smart String experts!)

Something like this (excuse crude ascii art) :

                                   /---Pixnet --> splitter/passive hub/SmartHub --> SSCs
EtD--Pixnet-->SmartHub
                                  \----SSCs

I don't know the limit of RJ-45 throwing PixelNet, but I think it can go beyond 8 feet (it is similar in spec to a normal network connection).

well, i can run them all individually from an active hub that sits in the middle of that span...

I'm just trying to lower my SSC count, so I can add more goodies this year.

I think i'm going to try this...

Active hub to...

SSC1 --> tree 1 (only 3 nodes) --(4ft)-->  dummy node  --(4ft)--> tree 2 (only 3 nodes)  --(4ft)--> dummy node  --(4ft)--> tree 3 (only three nodes)
SSC2 --> tree 4 (only 3 nodes) --(4ft)-->  dummy node  --(4ft)--> tree 5 (only 3 nodes)  --(4ft)--> dummy node  --(4ft)--> tree 6 (only three nodes)
SSC3 --> tree 7 (only 3 nodes)  --(4ft)--> dummy node  --(4ft)--> tree 8 (only 3 nodes)  --(4ft)--> dummy node  --(4ft)--> tree 9 (only three nodes)

That looks like it will work (assuming the distance isn't a problem)

It sounds like you stil have a lot of work to do before the show starts. How long will your display be running for? Will you be doing videos?
