Yeah. I agree .. the rain is a pain when you are working on or running a show. It shuts both down ....

It's been raining here in the PNW for a week straight! I work in a rain jacket and under a tiny umbrella bits the sideways rain that kills me.

This is the first year I am too chicken to run a show in the rain.  Just got everything up and running yesterday.  Totally freaked out about all the SS gear getting wet.

As long as it just drizzles, i run it. Like right now. If things start acting wierd i shut it off.

Here in the PNW if we shut the show down for rain we would never have a show.  <fp.

Hope you got your work done.  It's 62F and raining here again and more rain on the forecast.

Thanks, but I don't want anymore waterproofing tests...

Was hoping it would let up but not happening.

So I scramble to finish setting and test running my show Saturday and I awake to a very rainy day and some lights are on.  I go to check it out and here I must have not fully closed a LE case since it was wide open in the rain   :o  Yesterday I start checking to see how bad the damage was and after getting rid of the standing water, the moisture dried up from the heat of the controllers and problems went away.   8)

I can't complain in Northern VA.  I took the day off today because we had 70 degree weather (I still don't have my show up.  I have my mega tree, my mini trees, my star, my eaves, and my upstairs lights wrapped.  I still need to put out my spots, my strobes, and my SS matrix)  It is supposed to rain tomorrow, though.  Today was absolutely gorgeous!

+100 LOL

I'm playing my down due to technical difficulties audio bit way too much.

Even drizzle is affecting the expresses.  I start the day after thanksgiving but I don't think I've been able to run the show more than 7 days total.  Depressing.  Never thought I'd say this but come on snow!!!!! Gawd I must be sick for that statement.

Dean,

Sorry to hear that.  It can be a downer when things don't go well (I am sure we have all had those moments and I have been through a few myself this season).  Just know that when it does work, the joy it brings to everyone (including yourself) far outweighs all the frustration.

Here's keeping my fingers crossed for you!

the rain has actually been the deciding factor for placing the electronics of my "smart arches" inside the thinwall pvc, rather than lighting up on the outside.

Ive never had a problem my GFCIs tripping in the rain, and it typically rains about half the time where I live. Maybe the rain where I live is distilled, so it doesn't conduct electricity.  ;D

...Wait, even though I said that to be funny, would it be possible that some regions have acid rain, and therefore conductive stuff in the water?

Also, is this something to do with the lights being on controllers, as I've never heard of anybody having problems with a static display, either. Maybe is it more prone on incandescents vs. LED strings because of the higher power draw? Or strings with removable (led OR incandescent) bulbs vs. non-removable ones?

Perhaps some of the people running into problems with tripping GFCIs chime in on their type of lights and if they live in s "boogey man" acid rain zone?
Title: Re: rain
Post by: deanathpc on December 05, 2012,
I have a mix of incan and led myself.  Static isn't a problem though.  It's when they are on the controllers that the problems start.

Incans here. After a few days of it being dry my LE returns to normal operation I think I may beef up the waterproofing on it with some hot glue....

Speaking of rain I just had a sucessful A Ha moment and test with an SSC waterproofing idea. I wasn't looking forward to using silicone to seal the wire holes and having to pull it off later if I wanted to reprogram. It's based on the idea someone mentioned about using a balloon as a waterproof boot for ethernet connections.

I grabbed a package of those big punching bag balloons the kind with the big rubberband on them from the toy department in Wal Mart (was like $3 for 8). I cut off the rolled over part that you blow into to give it a bit more stretch at the opening. Then I was able to fold it mostly inside out and work it over the SSC enclosure ending up with one completely sealed end that has the bonus of a rubber loop to hang it from.

Post by: kjam22 on December 06, 2012,
That is what I am doing.  First round my balloons were too small and they would tear from being stretched and exposed to uv.  I have had some issues but only when the balloon has torn.

Wish something like that would help me...  Not using SSC though.

Another night (tonight) lost to rain and tripping GFCI's. :(  This is getting old....

I've taped a lot of the unused ends on my LEDs and incandescents. But still hate the rain. Need to get all my stuff of the ground.

Post by: deanathpc on December 08, 2012,
I have gotten as much off of the ground as I could.

Now my static lights are fine. It's the controllers not playing nice.

Are you wireless?
Title: Re: rain

No. Gave up on wireless a long time ago. Didn't like how it caused flickering and delays / lag time in the show.

We have been lucky so far. It has rained the past three nights, but has not started until after the show was done.
My wife bought me an electric leaf blower three years ago.
Today I actually found a use for it. (I don't do leaves)
I walked around the yard this afternoon and blow dried all the extension cords.  ;D

Hey Dean, its raining here now and ive had the worst luck the gfis kicking. What i did today is took all the baggies off and propped all cables to a horizontal position so no water can lay in the socket and now it seems fine right now. Im not trying to jinx myself but its working.  Give it a try. It may help.
Title: Re: rain
Post by: deanathpc on December 08, 2012,
Yeah everything here is horizontal already.  For the most part. The supply cables are covered or wrapped up and appear dry. So... It's something with the controllers.  Just don't know what.

I don't have em all above ground though I'm sure.  Could be part of it.  Some are going to be near impossible to get above ground though the way things are laid out.  Half the display is still working though. So that theory might be blown out.  I just don't know.  I'm at a loss right now.

Also,  my leaping deer are secured with all thread and the deer are metal framed and they kept kicking the gfi. So i did a process of elimination .. unplugged everything from that controller and plugged each channel back in one at a time til i found the problem. I know its frustrating but thats what worked for me... give that a try .

I'm tempted to pull my gfci and put a standard outlet for my show hardware... I actually got shocked and they didn't trip from a broken bulb the night I installed my stuff... I'm still trying to figure out why it is tripping for rain but when it ACTUALLY SHOCKED ME they didn't trip....

Yes I've started unplugging controllers trying to narrow it down. Seems sporadic as of right now though.  I have some more things to check still.

i just finally setup the controllers and hub for my mega tree.  i decided to make some extension cords for the 3pin wire using the 3 core connectors.

i can see all sorts of pixels acting up, and saw one node decide to bbq itself.

since it's been raining for a few days, i can blame it on the rain, right?  <yk..
Title: Re: rain
Post by: TexasStingray on December 10, 2012,
If that make you feel better than sure, It's still not going to resolve the issue.
Title: Re: rain
Post by: chrisatpsu on December 10, 2012,
i believe my extensions i made are what's causing the random pixel acting up.

the node that fried itself didn't have enough coating on it.  i had spliced it in, and forgot to coat it.

no rain tomorrow, so i'll have a chance to make repairs

The test function works great for this, the channels light up until the guilty channel trips the GFI.

the strange part is I could actually see the node smoking two nights ago.   I went to replace it today, and can't find it.

Looks like I'm jinxed this year too. First time ever in 20+ years of lighting that my lights were not all on last night. Big rain with lots of wind. Controllers are all nice and dry, but GFIs kept tripping every time strobe channels (3) kicked in.....tried my best to track it down, but gave up quickly and just ran a sequence I call "afterglow" ... no music, just Aether fades.

Everything is fine tonight, but more rain expected so I'll be doing some additional weatherproofing where possible.
