We have those at my workplace. The balls are pretty thick and heavy. Nothing like ping pong weight at all.

Use in an air cannon that is synced with a motion detector trigger.

How about a fountain that uses balls instead of water?   as balls are shot out in an arc, a funnel, rain gutter, or something else brings the balls back to a hopper to be shot out in the are again.

aether2 floods can be used to illuminate the balls as they travel the arc in changing colors.

maybe the shooter can pivot (with a motorized driver) to shoot in many directions.  maybe multiple shooters can occupy this illuminated space.

just what i need, another idea that i don't have time to finish...

drill a hold in the end, stick a smart string node inside, then seal it up. boom! a truly waterproofed node!

If you are serious about this.  Remember the hole has to be 10mm (1/2inch) for the smart string to fit.  This means probably either the 2" or 4" size.  4" might look a little big, but it really depends on how you are planning on hanging your strings.  I could see this looking pretty cool in a matrix where the balls are close together.

I seem to remember someone using ping pong balls in the past and they didn't hold up to the UV light or weather

But nothing ventured nothing gained I guess :)

A weep hole may be needed to avoid condensation. A good idea though.
