5050 RGB LED Quesitons
« on: January 24, 2011, »
I am planning for my 2011 display and want to make some use of 5050 led modules, not pixels.
I have a few questions for individuals who might have seen or had experience!

The modules I am looking at are at:

If I read it right, these are 3 RGB LED's per module.  Is this correct?
I am looking to line my windows and front courtyard wall with these modules  and then putting a coroplast diffuser in front of them of that I can have nice clean lines of light.
Originally, I was looking at dedicating 110v channels off on a controller and putting up LED rope light in red/green/white to accomplish much the same thing, but I like the abilities that you receive with RGB, plus it turns out it is cheaper than the LED rope light.

I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with these before I order!

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Mike.

I was thinking of the 3 Channel RGB DMX controllers that Ray Wu has.  They are capable of 1 or 2 amps per controller depending.

That should work fine. I know that dmoore has a large post about it and the 3 channel dmx

Cheers

Which DMX dongle are you planning to use? If the D-Light V3 Dongle, it is having a problem with the "start number" on those 3-channel controllers. As in - if you set it to be 50, 51, 52 it will answer (dependably!) as 51, 52, 53.

If you use a Lynx Dongle, it works perfectly.

Here is what I have put together so far.

30 LED per meter strips should work well behind coroplast diffusers and be moderately priced.
I should be looking for common anode strips like:

but I need to make sure they are common anode.  Looking for guidance on how to determine!

I can then attach this to one or multiple 3 channel dmx controllers like this one:

I also need a 12V power source which could be a AT computer Power Supply, 12V supply, multiple different power injectors from Ray Wu.
