Title: Wireless Setup?
Post by: rdebolt on January 09, 2012,
I have my EtD running from my wired main PC, but how do I set up my network so that I can run it from my wireless laptop? Take into consideration that I know very little about networking. I am running the show with LSP v2 or Xlights.

as long as you can access the same network with the wireless part of you laptop, you shouldn't have to change anything

so, if you have a router or switch, you can use one of the normal ports on it to plug in your eD, then any computer on your network can be used to control it.

That is actually what I thought, but it would not run last night with LSP. I am converting to Xlights right now and will see if it works.

i sort of cheat, by using the laptop to "teamviewer" into the main computer, then run the show.
it saves me from remembering which computer i had what sequence saved on.

No luck. Lights run fine with wired connection from main PC. I have main PC connected to switch. So basically it goes Switch hub with modem and main PC plugged in.

Chris I don't know what "teamviewer" is.

it's remote desktop software that's free to use for personal use.

i "remote" into my main computer, and then run from there.

so, are you saying that it the cable is plugged directly into you computer, it works, and doesn't if it's moved to the router/switch ?
Title: Re: Wireless Setup?

No. I have 2 computers, actually more, but for this sake 2. My "Main" (desktop) and my Laptop. They are both on the same network, but the "Main" pc is wired to the switch, the laptop is wireless. I would like to be able to run the show from my laptop wireless. Clear as mud?

simply being on the network should work.

what brand is the wireless router?

also, is there a firewall preventing the outgoing software.

does it work with the laptop wired in?

in the settings for your network cards, try temporarily disabling the laptop's wired network adapter

All I did was plug it in and setup xlights to use the e1.31 rather than the USB dongle.

The EtD has never been directly connected to my laptop, which is running things.

Modem is an Actiontec M1000

I have firewall turned off while I have been testing.

I have not tried Laptop wired yet

Disabled Wired and still no go.

I will try wired and see what it does.

Question:

When you plug the EtherDongle into your network router (cat5) and ac transformer does the Green led come where you plug in the cat5 along with maybe some slow flashing of the orange led?

Yes (Unlike my second Etd I might add ;) )

if it works wired, and not wireless from the laptop, i'm thinking either firewall, or maybe the router doesn't like multicast over it wirelessly...  i don't have much expierence wiith actiontec
Title: Re: Wireless Setup?

So that means the router is talking to the Etd. So that is good

It seems the computer is not sending out the multi-cast to the router. Is there anything blocking output on your computer?

to expand Rick's comment...   and messages, or statuses with your firewall or antivirus. sometime they see the broadcast of multicast as suspicious activity.

I don't know what it would be, I have firewall and antivirus off. I have a wireless printer that works fine, so I would think that computer is sending some data anyway.

I turned firewall on just to see what would happen and when I tried to run, it wanted to block, but I set to allow and still nothing.

it seems as though the connection isuue would be in a setting or feature in the wireless router. I'm not entirely sure.

maybe someone else can help?

i thought maybe AP isolation might be turned on
Title: Re: Wireless Setup?

try this, hook your laptop up wired to your router and see if you can access the eD then.  We know your laptop is not blocking anything when you hook your laptop direct wired to the eD, but hooking wired to your dsl modem/router will tell us if the router is blocking multicast.

I cant find anything on the net about that model supporting or not supporting multicast - I am still searching....

The Actiontec/Qwest M1000, PK5000, GT701WG ADSL, and MI424WR modem/routers do not support the multicast protocol, which is needed for the all-in-one printer to be easily detected on the wireless network.

am still searching

have you checked that you have the latest avail firmware for your modem/router?

Title: Re: Wireless Setup?
Post by: mykroft on January 10, 2012,
OK, am finding more and more - that model does not support multicast...... :(

you have 2 options....

1)  disable the router/wiresless in it and hook up a compatible wireless router to a eth port on it, and then use the ports on the wireless router (dlink is a brand that i have used for years and have been happy with).

2)  set your dsl modem into bridge mode, then again get a wiresless router and set it up with your PPPoE login/pass - your modem will just get you your internet connection in this mode (like a dumb modem, everything would be config/setup in the wireless router).

Option #2 is what I use as I have a Actiontec dsl modem here from Qwest as well.  Phone line from wall to dsl modem, eth cable from dsl modem to wireless router, login/password firewall config, port forwarding etc is all controlled from the wireless router.  The modem just sits there, in bridge mode the internet led will never light up as it never logs in with your PPPoE credentials because the wireless router does....

It is easy to put the dsl modem into bridge mode also...

Mykroft, thanks for the research. I have no problem getting a new modem, but I still have 1 question. If I can connect to the printer and 4 other computers on my home network is that not using multicast? Just curious trying to wrap my pee sized brain around this. Or is this a type of unicast?
Title: Re: Wireless Setup?
Post by: rrowan on January 10, 2012,
I believe multicast is alike a radio station it sends out some info and if your radio is listening to that freq than you hear that station along with any other radio.

So if your computer is sending out 239.255.0.1 …. 239.255.0.32 (assuming using 16k channels) and the etherdongle is listening for the 239.255 range of info. Your router normally assigns address for your computer something like 192.168.0.18 along with other computers and the printer. So they never listen to the 239 address/data.

Clear as mud?

Rick R.

P.S. I could be totally wrong and someone will correct me :)

I am not sure if I have to stick with "Approved" ones from my ISP or not, but this one is "Approved"

Multicast is specific on top of TCP/IP and SMB that your network router supports that other devices use to talk to each other.

Did you try my suggestion of hooking your laptop up to your router using a wired cable and trying to access the eD.  We know it works when you go direct from laptop to eD wired, but this will go laptop > router > eD - if it does not work this way - you have just confirmed your router does not support multicast....

That is correct what the router is not doing is auto forwarding the 239.255.x.x address range thru itself - so nothing is seeing the multicast packets...

I am not sure if I have to stick with "Approved" ones from my ISP or not, but this one is "Approved"

Seeing user reviews on Amazon about this modem - and they say no, to stream media to a Xbox 360 it requires multicast also, and users are saying no....

You dont have to use a approved dsl modem - you wont be able to get tech support from them on the modem.....

Ok, saw your updated post as I was typing this - so then the wireless part of the modem/router does not support multicast but the wired ports do - maybe Actiontec dont want to send the extra multicast data out the wireless because of bandwidth - but that seems silly as alot of ppls hook their Xbox 360s up wireless.....

Myk

Again, what I would do is keep your current modem/router - bridge it - and look for a good seperate wireless/router - like I did here....

Myk
Title: Re: Wireless Setup?
Post by: mykroft on January 10, 2012,
might call your isp tech support and ask them why multicast works wired, but not wireless and see what they say?

again, check if you have latest firmware for your current model...

Myk

Title: Re: Wireless Setup?
Post by: mykroft on January 10, 2012,
another possible solution - since the wired ports are forwarding multicast is....

get a wireless AP and plug that into a eth port on the back of your router - set it up as a seperate wireless network, then have your laptop connect to the new wireless network

That will give you access to the eD wireless, and also your normal network/internet going thru your router..

i have the Linksys(Cisco) Wireless Router WRT54G2 and I can confirm that multicast works with this router.
you don't have to get this model, but you could hook it up to your existing modem, and disable wireless on the modem, and set it up to be a gateway or bridge?

I have that same linksys wrt54g and you have to be careful of version numbers, not all are created equally. I bought a router compatible with ddwrt and haven't looked back.

I changed some settings in the wireless configuration and still no go. I guess it is time to go shopping for a new router. I won't be able to get out until this weekend probably, but I will post as soon as I get a new one and set up.

Chris is there a reason that you picked the on that you have? I have found a couple other Linksys similar to yours in my area, but have not found your specific one yet. If I am going to buy one, I want one that is going to be fast and have a very strong signal, but I also want it to support multicast of course. I don't really want to order one online if I don't have to.

I used to work for a company that had a close relationship with Linksys before they were bought out by Cisco.  most of my devices are still wireless G, and i've always liked the service with them...  you can call them, and they setup your router for whatever service you're using. plus if they have to replace your stuff, they overnight a new one to you, and even make sure you replace the power cord, "just in case"

I've had the older WRT54G in the past, and i couldn't get my hands on one anymore, so i found the model number with a "2" on the end to get something almost similar to it.

i'm running firmware 1.5.01

i'm sure there are newer ones out there that do more, but this one just did everything that were in MY needs.

Stupid question though. How will I know if it will support multicast. Will it say in the specs? For the ones that I have researched none say multicast anywhere. Or is it just a spec that I need to look for?

i felt bad saying it worked for me, but felt a little better that it now does actually work for me

In LSP it knows what is available. For example with my wired on it gives me and option for multicast connection wired or wireless. With the wired off I do not have the wired option. Not sure with Xlights, I am just using the IP config settings.
