Title: New LE build, need help troubleshoot
Post by: rcouto on October 07, 2009,
Hi there,

This is my first LE build.  I've assembled the whole thing and programmed the PIC myself.
When I power on the board, both the 3.3 and 5V LED's light up correctly however the channel 6 led also lights up fairly faint.  Pressing the mode button does nothing, pressing the select button causes the LED for channel 16 to light up.

Could someone please let me know how they would go about troubleshooting this?

Thanks,
RCouto

Hi Rcouto,

When you power up the LE does it display anything on the 7-segment leds?

If the board was soldered properly and the parts are in correctly then most likely the pic was not programmed properly.

The standard thing that is asked for is close up pictures of both sides of the board

P.S. Don't worry the problem will be found and it will work. :D

I agree with Rick, Reflash the pick. This has happened to me in the past. Reflashing fixed it.

Hi Rick,

Nothing displays on the 7 segment leds.
I just re-programmed the PIC with no luck.
I took a few pictures however my photography skills appear to be limited.
Is there a area in particular that I should zoom in or focus on?

Thanks,
Ricardo

Hi Ricardo

How are you programming the pic? Like using the latest firmware from the wiki and using a pickit2 connected directly to the LE or something else?

As far as taking pictures this link might helps some http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=1757.0
Try to get pictures of the back of the board and the large chips for the front.

No lights on the 7-segment leds could be the driver chip (large chip to the right of the leds) but also points to the pic.

I am programming the pic directly on the board with the pickit2.  I did get the latest HEX file from the wiki.

I had a spare of the driver chip and that did not do anything.

I'm attaching a few pictures

Thanks,
Ricardo

You do have one 100uf capacitor in backwards between the voltage regulators and the power leds.  I think the bottom one

Hey Ricardo,

Verify that all 16 triacs are connect to the red heat sink (look at the numbers on them)

I just corrected that.
The same problem persists.
Could that have damaged something else?
All the triacs look good.
What should I look at next?

Thanks

I just reprogrammed the PIC.  Is it normal that a few of the leds on the Express board light up when the pickit2 is programming?

Remove both the pic and led driver chips and check for any bent pins. if they look good put them back in and power up. If you have another LE try the pic from board into this one. Possible bad pic but it is rare.

It worked!!!!!

I tried many things at once, don't know exactly what did it however I got some blinky going!

This also proved that my dongle is good.  :)

Thank you much for help.

Cheers!
