Title: Dumb Flex Strips...
Post by: chrisatpsu on March 09, 2012,
I just ordered a couple of these.

are these decent?

for free shipping, and about $20 for 5m, i figured i can play with these a bit. at least for r&d stuff anyways.
i got the 30leds/m waterproof.

oh yeah...  disclaimer...

There are NOT from Ray...  i just saw the cheap price and figured to take a shot.

and they DON'T work with the SSC's

they are cuttable, and will work with a MR-16, as long as i don't go over the amperage of the controller.

That is a pretty good deal.
I have been winning an auction here and there on Ebay averaging about 17.00 dollars a piece.
Of course you don't have to deal with watching 50 auctions.. 8)

No, free shipping.
I just do an advanced search, add in in free shipping, and go from there.
The past week has not been good though. High demand for rgb strips it seems.
They have been averaging 20 dollars.
I have about 245 days to get the three or four more that I need... ;D

Post by: angus40 on March 09, 2012,
That is too funny... couting the days already .

i was takin a look through ebay's led strip sales /auctions and noticed the 0 bids starting price  of 9.00$  but the shipping was 19.99@ something like that .

It then ocured to me that there is a fixed minimum , wonder if a person could get better price contacting the vendor when buying multiple.

i just hope they are the real deal...

i asked if they are 4 wire
yes...
i asked if each wire was a seperate color, red, green, blue...
yes...
i asked if they are common anode...
sure...

i think i should be fine. I hope that RJ still intendeds to come out with the pixelnet controller for dumb strings. I think that what i would use for these.
my backup plan is to buy more mr16's if they aren't ready for this year.
Title: Re: Dumb Flex Strips...
Post by: chrisatpsu on March 10, 2012,
i just saw that the price went back up, but at least it only went up about $2.00   not too bad.

what are you guys build with your dumb strings?

i'm thinking of using mine for arches...  break them up into sections would make it nice.  i felt like using the smart string flex strips would be a waste of 120 individual controlable nodes, that i could use somewhere else.

i'm planning 10 over-the-driveway arches using the dumb ribbons. each arch will use 2x5M ribbons and be inside of pvc.  i still need to find out if that PVC will be rigid enough in this large of a span...  30'-40'

I bought 32 of these dumb strips. http://www.ebay.com/itm/270921756279?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I sent an email to seller and asked him his lowest price. He said $19.00 a strip. Then sent him an offer for $19.00 a piece and he accepted offer. Not sure exactly what I am going to do with them. My first thought was to replace my four 18 foot arches with them. I was thinking of wrapping each arch with 8 strips each just like the incandescent mini's I use now. I would use Ray's 27 channel controllers and 12v 350w power supplies to drive the strips. I could fit 2 controllers and two powers supplies in one CG-1500 case. I hope heat would not be a problem. I live in CO where the weather is pretty cold at night.

The other option would be to outline the vertical lines of my house. All horizontal lines and windows I am using digital strips. I am also building twenty 2M digital strips placed on the roof of lower garage to create a piano/equalizer effect. Each strips will be placed about 10 inches apart from each other with coro strips over top of them. Similar to Fast Eddy's grass poles but on the roof.

I think the demand for these, just from this forum alone is pretty high right now.
19.00 is a very good price.
I am thinking the demand should slow down in a month or two when it warms up, and people start going outside again... :D

how are you mounting the leds to the star?
Title: Re: Dumb Flex Strips...
Post by: wwwgator on March 17, 2012,
Im using the sticky back to hold the strips to the PVC until everythng is tested, then using 30mm white shrink tube to cover the ends and the holes where the wires enter the pvc.

this is the space between the end of one strip and the wire entry way of the next. The shrink tube will cover both.

I'll be firing it up for the first time tonight and hopefully video to follow...

This is the latest one, The other video loading was shot with some daylight left so you you can see how big this thing is.
Everything was press fit, not glued yet. Tommorrow Im going to enclose the electronics and set the arms.
one more test, then its on to the shrink tube ..... 3 more to build.....
If you have any ideas for patterns you wish to share....gladly appreciate any input or commentary

How do you have it all set-up. Are you using lynx... Perhaps a diagram of your set up?
Title: Re: Dumb Flex Strips...
Post by: wwwgator on March 19, 2012,
using Vixen, DMX dongle to drive it all. I do have a dedicated power supply local to the display, too much currrent draw to send it all over the CAT5 cable (2.8A full on white). I drilled and tapped 1/2 pvc connectors into a 5" PVC cap to hold the spokes. Then stacked the boards inside a 5" tube for weather protection with another cap to close it all up. I have a rigid pipe that is going to be pounded into the ground and threaded into the 5" tube to support the entire thing.

The price is good (especially the $19), but I'm wondering if they are sufficiently weatherproof (the claim is IP65).

1) How well sealed do they appear to be?

2) Is IP65 sufficient?  The literal descripton of IP65 sounds quite sufficient, but I notice most people are going for IP 67 or IP 68 on pixel nodes.

Title: Re: Dumb Flex Strips...
Post by: chrisatpsu on March 20, 2012,
the IP rating would depend on your use. indoors, it doesn't matter. outdoors, but inside of something, it doesn't matter, laying on the ground in the middle of a puddle, it matters.

I just got my dumb strips in today.

I like the waterproofing on them. too bad the smart string flex strips cant be waterproofed ths way.

first pic compares smarts string flex strip (has an IC chip) and the dumb strips

second pic, i tried to get a closeup of the waterproofing, it's like it's a solid flexible plastic bubble with no air pockets.

If you are refering to the one posted; yes 2, actually a little left over.

My star used 27- 1' sections ( 3 per short arm x7 arms + 6 per the long base)
When I was testing the dmx boards at my bench, I wired up all 8 as short arms....possible to lay on roof ( considering at the moment), but I wanted the extra height as this display(s) will be out in the yard.

I sent a vimeo link to one of my co-workers, who since I have corrupted into the world of blinky flashy (muuahhh...evil laugh) and his wife is very anxious to see if I have theirs completed yet.

Yes, it will be in your garage friday am.....

Why don't I see a ton of wire going to your star ?

does each segment have it's own channel wires ? that looks great.

If you are willing to share the how to would help me design my own but different as to not copy .

thanks

Thats the beauty of this....All wiring is internal to the spokes (see picture). Culminates in 108 wires in the 4" center cap and lands on 3 sandwiched  DMX boards in the horizontal tube out the back of the display. The only cabling external is power and a CAT5 carrying the DMX to it.....now that I got the wireless from the co-op.....

.
It is a tight fit with all the segment wires coming in but its clean when its all assembled.
feel free if you have any questions  to post or pm ....someone taught me, it's my obligation to pass it on

They are Ray's 27 Channel boards
http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/701799/209915969-378111925/Easy-DMX-LED-controller-dmx-decoder-driver.html

As David mentioned earlier, it is very wise to allow for a good burn in period. I had 2 channels on 2 boards fail (out of 15 boards Ive purchased already) due to bad soldering on the output transistors- easily replaced.
DMX addresses set via dip switches- no programmers required.

I bought some of these in January. I alsl got 1.5M (5-30cm strips), with a 24ch IR remote controller for 20$.

I made a 12VDC battery pack with one 9V and two D-cells, put in a switch, and attached them to my son's snare durm for us to use performing with the Bagpipe band we are in durring St. Patricks day. SO cool!

In testing, The LEDs lasted for 10 hours (constand - ON) before I got tired of timing it. Next step it to make a sound activated, Flash with each drum strike.

Dont have tonight to look at all of these 4 pages of posting, but can not wait to play with these.

Mike

Now that all 4 stars are done, on to the dumb strip trees.....

decided to have 1 central controller with CAT5 to feed each tree.
So, I married Ray's 27 ch controller with a wireless reciever and a bunch of RJ45 jacks.
To handle the power, I am using 1 pair per wire. (wh-or/or= red, Wh-Gr/re= Green, Wh-Blu/Blu= blue, WH-Brn/Brn= Common White)

And Yes, I got lazy, decided too much work to unsolder the screw terminals, just epoxied RJ45s in place with short jumper to terminal strips....

1 power cord to controller box- 1 CAT5 to each tree...wireless DMX in......on to the trees.....

your blue and green are going to come on at the same time.

pins 3&4 would be White-Green & Blue
pins 4&5 would be White-Blue & Green

What wireless receiver (and transmitter) did you use for DMX?

(I would have been tempted to allocate some more wires to the common.  My reasoning would probably have started with 1 wire to each color and 3 to the common (1+1+1+3), then distribute the "spare" two wires somewhere like 2+2+1+3 or 2+1+1+4.  But so long as the two conductors are enough for your full load without too much drop I guess it doesn't matter).

I did it that way for simplicity's sake. Total connected draw per 2.5m tree is 1.06A full on white.

I have 12 strings of 50 count rgb and the g b are swapped also.

I don't think the silk screen standard is paired up with wire manufacturer .

+5 b g r is on the pcb  and the 4 wire is  y g b r  so to keep the wire flat and untwisted green has to go to blue .
Title: Re: Dumb Flex Strips...
Post by: chrisatpsu on April 07, 2012,
i didn't mean the wire color was wrong, i meant the the "g" printed on the white circuit board of the strip actually controlled the blue, and the "b" controlled the green.
