My Smart Strings so far
« on: December 17, 2011, »
Here are a few videos of what I have done.  I purchased all pixel strings and have had not one problem.  I am still trying to program sequences and am only planning for next year.  I have several strings up but they are all starting from channel 1.  I have had no problems with 128's and am running 9 strings from one hub without problem.

Hey Will, what sort of wire stripper are you using in the video?  It looks like it might be easier to use than mine.

My technique is slightly different.  After I strip the wires, I will tin them then place the heat shrink over the wires on one side.  Next, bend each end into a hook.   'Hook' together the wire from each side to be spliced and crimp them together with a needle node pliers.  Finally solder the connections and slide the heat shrink over the conections and apply heat.  This makes an excellent mechanical and electrical connection.
Thanks for the video!

Will, i like your idea of coming out of the SSC case with both wires on one end.

Ron, i have 2 pairs of wire strippers, one that looks like that, i use for stranded wire, and i have another from ideal that i use of solid wire (for structural wiring)

well, i have a third pair, but they are right angle 12/2 romex strippers
To rule the entire tri-state area!  What's that? Perry the Platypus!!!

Ron I think I got that stripper at radio shack.

I'm wondering if I want to put the rest of my lights up or just keep playing with the sequencing.

Finally got the last of my lights up today.  Fortunately I knew where I planned to have them, and included their definitions in LSP -- so it all worked the first time.

I have 4 ROUGH sequences, each was a test of a certain element (tree, arches, coro, ...) so now I building new sequences that show of EVERYTHING along with the LSP transitions.  Slowness with LSP and 4000 channels is the biggest remaining frustration.  Still, don't know how I'd get as far as I have without LSP.

On the splices from the factory, I find it very easy to use a razor knife to slice off the heat shrink and desolder the old splice.  I do not bother twisting my wires together and I do them straight thru since I am not using them where there is any stress on the wires.  I tin the ends first then hold them together and apply a little more solder.  I leave about 18" of lead between the first bulb and the controller because, at least so far, I am mounting my controllers under my eaves and I need the length to get away from the edge of the window or the gutter, etc.  I do not have nodes on my yard elements this year.  One thing I like is the flat ended cap you show in the video.  I have not seen any of those in my local stores.  Where did those come from?

The flat end caps were actually the only caps home depot had of that size.
