This is killer. Especially with the outlets on board. I may have to do something similar this year. Thanks for posting!

LOVE IT!    never seen that before...

You almost could drill a couple holes in the side near the top for a pegboard hook, to hold a wreath.   ;D

Glad you liked the plug idea.  It has come in extremely useful!!  I actually plan on modifying them a little this year and placing a DMX SSR4 inside of the pipe to control a few plugs up the back. Adding the wireless option will be a great thing too.

I built those 4 years ago and they are still going strong.  I actually have mine still outside buried under about 10 inches of snow.

Right now I have these 1ft tall light up candy canes that I bought at big lots (like 20 sets or so). They really look like crap when compared to the size of the rest of my display.
I was thinking of doing these north poles, but adding a wide radius U-shaped bend at the top, so that they would look like larger than life candy canes...I could then drill holes and add red lights as necessary for nighttime.

Lots of possibilities, not just for north poles. :D

Instead of drilling holes, you might consider wrapping them with red rope light

I'm planning on adding an SSR4/DMX in the pole,  4 c9 LEDs (R,G,B,W) inside the globe and an integrated arch mount to the bases.Function, color, flashy. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. >.d9

I thought of doing the same and decided to buy those color changing bulbs and just have them on in static mode not controlling them this year but still get the blinky effect some what

I did something very similar but used some 3 channel DMX controllers form China driving some RGB LED modules from bigclive.

Or you could add rope light clips to the stripes and use different colored rope lights and multiple channels.

OK please let me know where you can find clear PVC?
Title: Re: North Poles
Post by: sakkk05 on January 25, 2011,
I havn't used any clear PVC for a while but there are several places to find it online. It is about 2x the price of reg PVC (at least the last time I used it)  Could possibly use the same fittings and bend choroplast for the tube!!
Title: Re: North Poles
Post by: sakkk05 on January 25, 2011,
WOW just did a quick search on 4" clear PVC looks like it is up to $23.00 per FOOT. Like the idea but may be a little cost prohibitive LOL!!! I'm thinking try coro for the tube!!!
Title: Re: North Poles
Post by: rogerwh on January 25, 2011,
Not sure it is sturdy enough to meet the needs but clear plastic tubing can be found for under $1 ft if bought in quantities.  Might want to request some samples and see how it works out.

That is why I asked because the costs I was seeing would make it almost more productive to use glass.

Title: Re: North Poles
Post by: sakkk05 on January 25, 2011,
The plastic tubing on the link looks promising 18 3" x 48" tubes for around $60 sounds a lot better than $25 per foot LOL. Glass would be cool but a little more difficult to work with and with the wind that I get would prob be broken easily. I have a new project to play with!!!
Title: Re: North Poles
Post by: CB on January 25, 2011,
I actually just orders some of those clear tubes in large diameter for making a couple of north poles plus some of the smaller 1" with the hope of being able to heat them and bend them at the top for making some candy canes as well using red and clear mini lights (need to find some use for incans for 2011).

This all has me now thinking about putting in a pneumatic tube station to allow for donations to be deposited directly into my garage...ha ha ha good lord this hobby is like crack.  I need a methadone clinic after the holidays. :-[

What size is the pvc pipe.  I am guessing 3".  I bought a golbe today and it has a 4 inch opening.  So would a 4" to 3" reducer be in order?

Yes you are correct it is 3 inch pipe and 3" to 4" reducer, but measure your globes and match to it and make sure you get globes with a neck on them it makes it easier securing the globes

Watching this reminds me of what Disney did in California for their World of Color show. In the area you stand to watch they have globes, that at the beginning of the show they keep a single color designating the area, Red, Blue and Yellow. After the show, they go through a color changing program just to look cool. Also, that show is so cool as it is, and I would recommend checking it out if ever there.

I may have to attempt making some of these, as it is a great idea, and seems like a cheap thing with great effect.

What would i need to make this North Pole with RGB?

Post by: chrisatpsu on March 13, 2012,
funny, you should ask, i was playing around with my idea on this just an hour ago...

i bought a 6inch ceiling light with pull chain from walmart for about 5-6 dollars. (it comes with the glass globe)

just the globe part would sit atop a 4 inch pvc coupler, on top of a 5ft section of 4inch pvc pipe.

inside the globe, i'd run about 3 or 4 smart string squares, or rectangles.
one works, but 2 or more makes it a little brighter.

Chris,
What smart string squares or rectangles would work with the SSC's and do i need cat 5 to connect them together?
I plan on making 30 of them to outline my yard. Oh and how many hubs would i also need? And one more question what and how many power supplies. Sorry for so many questions. My first time going RGB.
Title: Re: North Poles
Post by: chrisatpsu on March 13, 2012,
to be safe, i'd run a hub in a battery box, then a cat5 wire to the base, (make a hole, or slit for the wire to get inside the pole), then up the pole to the globe. then have your ssc break out into the nodes in the globe...

i'm looking into having nodes on the side of the poles iteself in like a candy cane spiral, i'm still working on what i'm going to do with that.

the hub in the battery box would handle a large number of poles with just nodes in the globe.

having nodes on the side would just depend on what nodes, and how many

I ran 16 Northpoles off a single hub last year.  Each pole had 6 rectangular modules in it.  I connected the modules directly to the SSC and ran a cat5 cable up the middleof the pole to the pigtail on the SSC. The modules were glued to a 1" piece of class 200 PVC the SSC was housed inside the 1" PVC.  I used acrylic globes for a few reasons 1 being a safety issue 2 they diffuse the light better than the glass and 3 they are cheaper.  The poles were supported by driving a 1" pipe into the grass the pipe had coro rings on it making it fit the 3" pipe like a perfect sleeve.

They can be seen in the background of this photo.

I can post some more detailed pictures of them when I get off duty on Thursday.

Is this not just a HolidayCoro MegaBall upside down? You wouldn't even need the cap.

No. They will not work. Although RJ is building a dumb rgb ssc controller yet to be released that may work with them.

Go to wiki for link to rectangles that work with ssc controller.

the picture on that page doesn't match the actual product. the actual smart string plastic rectangle have 3 wires. that picture is there to give you a general idea what a plastic rectangle looks like.

I got a quick question.  How exactly are you keeping these in place?

The modules are hot glued onto the pipe that holds the SSC. There is a piece of coro in the collar that the modules and SSC are glued to. The globe sits on the collar and is held in place with three screws.  The pole slides over a sleeve which is hammered into the ground. I don't have any pictures of the sleeves on my laptop.
