RS485 Chip

Since the 8 pin sockets are on back order, I was wondering if you could directly solder the RS485 chip onto the board?

you can, but i would recommend against it if you have a version 3 board or older. Plus if the chip ever goes bad. Just a thought

I bought 8-pin sockets from Jameco (same MFG PN) for next to nothing (minimum order of 10).  Just a thought.

The 8-pin Tyco sockets are on backorder thru Mouser however you could use the following 8-pin FCI substitute from Mouser.
Just look up the Mouser part # 649-DILB8P223TLF

I have purchased a few of them.  They are the same and a penny less.

Last time I checked they were 50 cents each at Radio Shack.

I just substituted the 3M sockets (517-4808-3004-CP) for my 8-pins. $.16 ea so it wasn't going to break the bank. (Got plenty of other help doing that already.  )

Besides, the 3M's have pre-formed leads that will hold it in place while you solder it.

I also used the 3M sockets and they work just fine.

And I'll chime in as well.  I got an order from Mouser this week, and substituted the 3M sockets.  Just assembled a dongle, and they worked very well!

I do like the clips that hold the socket to the board.
