Demo of flexible strip snowfall tubes
« on: May 07, 2012, »
I build 1 meter flexible strip snowfall tubes. I took this video from 15 feet away. They will be at least 50 from viewer. They have great light even from 180 degree side angle. The greatest viewing angle in my show will be 45 degrees at most. I used a T8 fluorescent light protectors. I will connect minimum of 3 together but maybe up 5.

The first one has controller mounted to the top. I glued a 1" pvc coupler to tube to attach the controller.

Those are definitelly cool.  8)

Did you seal the bottom end? I couldn't tell from your pictures.

From the picture you are using one controller per 2 tubs is that correct?

Oh no not another project. I didn't see this............

Nice job, I really like the look!
Are these smart strings or are you using something else?
What would you estimate your cost per tube?

Thanks!

It's easy to tell that they are smart strings because non smart strings light up all leds whereas smartstrings can light each led individually and with proper sequencing can look like it is flowing along.

They are flexible strips 30 leds per meter. These are the TM1809 strips in the wiki. You could make four of them from one strip. I will let you do the math as far as cost. I am controlling two with one SSC but I will control at least 3 possibly 5 with a single controller. I have not sealed the bottom yet but I will. I will use the 1" slip to 1 inch male threaded pvc adapter and a 1 inch pvc threaded cap. I hot glue the adapter to tubing. Just like the top of tube on the left of first pic. I will probably paint pvc black.

Guys I am looking for ideas to hang them in a tree. They must be mounted in such a way that they will not be able to turn when hit with 50 mile/hr winds. Please help.

I believe that strips are limited to 120 pixels / 4 meters by RJ due to power overload concerns.

So only 4x 1m tubes will be possible.

Beautiful!!!!! I have similar wind issues with hanging 15" and 18" lighted plastic window decorations from my gutters like these: [imghttp://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQHY3-8OmtpPbL3o206re2t8Ekq0q1GorXXFZ_gNV-L8b3VgNb_BructclV][/img]
What I do is tie fishing line to the downspout on one side of the house (you can tie to a branch if you are putting these in a tree) and thread the fishing line through the decoration and tie it in to window frames or whatever is available as I go along so a strong gust won't just blow all of them onto the roof at once. I do this until I get to the other side of the house, where I tie it to the other downspout. Hope this helps, or at least gives you other ideas, George

Cool work thanks for sharing,
I'd maybe use a  exhaust clamp onto a flat surface.
A large automotive parts store and ask for white box clamps.
Cheep!

How about just using a longer piece of pvc that is secured to the ground and then snow tubes sit on that piece of pipe?

or have a cable go from the tree to the ground and secured it to the pipe with hose clamps.
