Title: Newbie Problems?
Post by: rdebolt on December 10, 2012,
Ok I have a couple...well actually several questions.

1. After I generate an effect I cannot get it into LSP. I have put it in my userpatterns in the LSP directory and it will show up in LSP but will not paste to grid. There are several XML choices and I have tried 2 of them with no success. Which one should I be using? And can some please give me exact step by step on how to do this?

2. After I generate an effect how can I find it again in Nutcracker?

3. I tried a local install and was unsuccessful in getting it to work. It seems like you have to be a programmer to use it. Very complicated for this old feeble mind anyway. What install is everyone using?

4. How do you see and use other's generated patterns. I cannot even see them, but I am sure I just don't know how?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(1) I double click the pattern and wait until it says copied. This can take 10-20 seconds depending how big the effect was. I then select a cell in LSP and type ctl-v

(2) The effects tab in nutcracker should show all the effects you have created so far

(3) Installing xampp (or wamp) should take about 5 minutes. take all defaults. I am sorry that it is more complicated than other programs. Next year i am thinking of changing the technology stack. One good thing about php as the core and a web page app. it runs on ipads, phones, linux and windows. Downside, to run it locally you need to install the 350 mbytes of apache and mySQL.

(4) To see others effects go to the Gallery tab aftrer you login

thanks

1. I will try that. I have been dragging and dropping.
2. I don't think that is there for me. It just wants me to build a new effect
3. I will work on getting that done, but I did ask for help on the install and really got no help. (not complaining, just a fact)
4. Gallery is working on this machine. Not  on my programing one. That's funny...

Thanks Sean and thanks for sharing this. I really want to get going on my leaping arches as well.

I too have had this problem with most effects I've generated.  they show in the patterns on the left, and will "draw" in the grid, but when you release the mouse after the drag, the grid is empty.  I posted this issue on December 2nd, and got no response.

"2. After I generate an effect how can I find it again in Nutcracker? "

From the effects tab (your screen Shot), click the "Submit Form to customize Effect" button.  It should show you all effects you've created for the selected target.

For your local install, folow the instructions in the Sticky post at the top of this forum entitled "Nutcracker Local Install"  You'll be running in a few minutes!

Yes, but i now have something like 10-15 hours of video. i was trying to get a simpler answer.

From the effects tab (your screen Shot), click the "Submit Form to customize Effect" button.  It should show you all effects you've created for the selected target.

That did it. Now how do I delete the ones that I don't want so they are not taking up space on the web site?

Thanks,

The issue is that the model (target) was saved with a blank name.  Do the process to remove it via the Admin->Clean up old effects option (as Sean mentioned in the prior forum entry.)  This should get rid of the blank model.  [Later edit.  Nevermind.  I see you did that and it worked!  Great to hear!]

Ok I installed Chrome and now I can see the effects. If I try to copy 1 I get an error at the top saying that I need to rename the effect: which I have done. I am following the tutorial on this page, but my step are as follows.

1. Login
2. Select Gallery.
3. Check the one that I want and rename it with no spaces. Actually just used the word copy for now, but I have tried just to highlight and paste as in the tutorial with no luck.
4. Select at the bottom "Copy Checked Effects" and get the error at the top of the page.

Make sure the that you have a target with the same effect type of the effect you are trying to copy.  Gallery copy does have some wonky behavior and is not 100% reliable (which 100% my fault since I programmed this module).  I had issues when I tried to copy a 'spiral' effect, but had no mega trees defined as a target.

Our workaround for now he means! *grin*.  The Gallery uses Ajax and JSON code which is javascript based.  Everyone adopted the same standard for javascript except for ONE company (any guesses?)  Microsoft decided to 'enhance' the W3C DOM standard (which in effect broke MS away from the standard.) This means that all of our javascript has to recognize which browser is Microsoft based and which is not, and run the appropriate javascript calls because of it.  In truth, I do not use IE and therefore the Gallery was never tested on Microsoft's platform.  I just assumed (incorrectly) that the Ajax library I was using will handle IE (which it doesn't).  I use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera (which all test out okay with the gallery).

Okay.  I know the problem.  Angus created most of these effects EARLY on in the development of nutcracker.  Since then, we have been adding attributes to the effects that will not be automatically generated by older effects (like this one).  Let me try to regen his effect and see if that clears it up.

Kurt;

you might try
http://localhost/nutcracker/effects/fix_defaults.php

i wrote this two months ago to fill in blank values in effects. the effects_dtl table had a default column at that time. two months ago i ran it on meighan.net and it fixed all blanks. it needs to be tested to make sure it doesnt effect the id columns that you use. it will execute replace sql's to put in defaults.

if it still works, running it once will fill in every missing blank.

thanks

I really found the issue now!  Looks like the query to give the Gallery display is causing something called a 'cartesian product' (for all you versed in database admin or database design will know what this is -- all others don't worry about it, just know it is not a good thing!)  I need to fix this query.  The work-around for now is if you see something with the same name in gallery, keep looking until you get to the LAST effect with that name.  This is the correct one to use and SHOULD not cause an error of missing name appearing.

I have tried to change the pattern From h to v and down to right and it will now not import correctly into LSP. It will make all cells gray. If I leave it the way you have it the pattern will paste into LSP fine, but the bars are vertical not horizontal. They do look fine in Nutcracker. Anything I am missing here?

Title: Re: Newbie Problems?

Are you putting the name into the little box under the words "use effect".  The names at the top of the screen are only for finding effects by user.  Some of the screens are not real clear on how to use them today.  That is because of the newness of the program and the lack of time to fix all the little things.  If I had more time myself I would volunteer to try to create some beginners docs, but that will come in time.  I am amazed at everything that Sean has accomplished and at all the other things on his plate along with having a full time job.  I don't know how I ever got anything done before I retired and I still have problems finishing my projects even being retired.
Title: Re: Newbie Problems?
Post by: kgustafson on December 11, 2012,
As I stated prior,  I am working to fix this, but know the issue is not exactly straight forward.

The problem comes when someone uses the same effect (with the same name) against multiple models (targets).  When this happens, the system creates thumbnails for each model/effect pair.  Gallery comes along and tries to figure out which thumbnail to show (when it has multiple to choose from).  This creates something called a cartesian product in SQL and literally creates information from inferences (relations) that are not necessarily true.  The true issue is that the thumbnails are not a product of just effects (and effects alone).  The application of an effect to a model is what creates the thumbnail.

Back to gallery.  Gallery is intended to be a listing of potential effects that can be applied to your models, showing you a thumbnail from someone else's model/effect pair.  The problem is that you do not necessarily have the same model as the person who generated theirs and when you select an effect for copy and copy it (so we cannot automatically generate a target/effect pair for you), it ONLY copies the effects to your effect data, BUT does not apply a target to it (since you haven't been asked to associate the copied effect to a target yet).  To realize the full effect of the copy, you will have to go to the effects page (selecting a target as you enter) and then selecting the copied effect and hitting submit (which in essence pairs the model and target together).

I am rewriting the code for gallery now.  I will be removing the calls to a table that we generated and calling information DIRECTLY from effects table.  One of the new database calls has a  left join on text that is making it very very slow though.  My current issue is determining which thumbnail to show you when I have an effect if there are multiple targets available (meaning the user has applied the effect to multiple targets).  This choice is critical to both what image is shown and what information is copied.

I just posted changes to github.  The new gallery will fix the problem with non-copies (at least it worked with the limited testing I have done.)  However, the counts are now skewed as the code removes duplicate effect name/ target name pairs.  For example, if you selected 10 records, it will find 10 records in the database, and if 3 are dups it will only show 7 items on the screen (which is not exactly as one would expect since you selected 10 records to show!)

Try the gallery again. I tried updating the gallery,  The program that reads all the effects and updates the gallery ran out of memory. It died this after deleting the gallery table.,I restored the table. so gallery should be back and ok

can you, provide

username
target
effect name

and have the info on meighan.net and then i can see if i can duplicate it.

rdebolt,

Never trouble.  This is actually how we troubleshoot most of the stuff since we do not have dedicated staff to test thoroughly.  (It is basically Sean and myself troubleshooting).

Thanks Kurt. Last night I was also working on some arches and made an effect that I liked the look of, it showed the effect fine, but would give me an error when I would try to export to xml for LSP. When I would go back into effects it was gone. Any thoughts?

Never mind: I just resent it and it went through fine. Last night was the definition of insanity "doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results". I tried at least 6 times last night, this morning no problem!

Is there a way to save all of my effects into one xml Userpatterns file? It is really a pain opening and closing LSP and recopying effects.

Also Can one of you look at my Megatree target and make sure that it looks ok please. I am not getting what I excpect in LSP tranfers.

Thanks Again!
Roger

Have you tried it in projects?  Not sure why your effect would 'disappear' from effects.  That sounds like a legit bug.

Kurt it was there this morning! Go figure. Maybe an issue with my home laptop. I modified my post can you check it for me? Also I just transfered the arch effects to LSP and they are not what I am seeing in Nutcracker. I have to have something off somewhere in my configurations!

I will answer two of the questions you have:

Can you save all effects into one XML Userpatterns file - Yes.  By using effects (not projects) you can.  If you want the generated LSP from projects in one file, you cannot.  This was intentionally broken up due the size of the files being generated (over 1GB) and LSP having trouble with this size of the UserPattern file.

Is my target correct?  Not sure of the geometry of your physical tree, but I can tell you what I see for the targets in your account.

Your mega tree expects there to be 32 Smart String Controllers connected to 32 smart strings of 60 lights each.  Each smart string is addressed so that the first pixel is at the bottom of the tree and the 60th pixel is at the top of the tree.  So let's say that your tree starts at address 1, 1 through 60 will be your first string (bottom to top), 61 starts at the bottom of the next string.

If your mega tree is actually 16 SSCs connected with strands of 120 lights that go in the up/down pattern, your model in Nutcracker is INCORRECT.  If your mega tree is 16 SSCs with the up-down then your model should be:  16 strings of 120 lights with 2 segments (right now yours are 32 strings of 60 lights with 1 segment).  I have a feeling that this might be the source of your issue.  You also want to select 'Y' for string to start at the bottom of your RGB device.

Thanks Kurt,

Well one problem then is the #1 node is programmed for the top of the tree not the bottom. I actually have 32-60 node strings with the Start channel at the top of the tree.

My arches, when I input my effect into LSP turned on the whole Arch not individual pixels as in Nutcracker. Can I bother you to check that for me as well? In LSP I have 4 arches with 120 node flex strips. I have the first 2 arches (as you look at them from the street) with channel #1 starting on the bottom left (Top of String) and the 2 on the left configured still with # 1 bottom left, but the string are programmed with #1 starting at the bottom of the string.  I did that to keep my cat5 runs to a minimum.

Thanks again,
Roger

Roger,

Just confirmed that the Y/N question of where your RGBs start is not working.  Whether I select Y or N it orients the pixels the same way (1 at the bottom and 60 at the top in your case).  This is a problem.

I will check into your arch issue.

Not sure about your physical layout (your message was a tad confusing to me).

Here is what Nutcracker thinks your arches are doing - address wise:

Address 1 is left bottom and 2 is the next pixel on the arch going right and up all the way to 120 (last pixel on first arch -- bottom right)
Address 121 is the left bottom of arch #2 all the way to 240 (right bottom arch #2)
Address 241 is the left bottom of arch #3 all the way to 360 (right bottom arch #3)
Address 361 is the left bottom of arch #4 all the way to 480 (right bottom arch #4)

Sorry for the confusion Kurt. In basic terms that is the correct set up. I figured out that my issue with the arches not looking the same in LSP is that I had my controllers collapsed instead of expanded when I was pasting to the grid. My bad there....sorry....

For projects to work correctly do I need to have a local install on my computer? The reason I ask is that I do not know how to upload my MP3 song for the project.

Thanks,
Roger

you dont need a local install, but if you are doing LSP generations I requested that people only do local install runs.
we do NOT want people generating projects for LSP on meighan.net because you produce 1 gigabyte files for each song.

Here is my method of generating, i do make all of my runs on a local install

1) create the effects i will be using
2) Create a project, and run it. I output for vixen. I get a file (USERNAME~PROJECT_ID.vix). So for example f~225.vix
3) Open f~225.vix in Vixen and assign the audio file and attach the lynx etherdongle as the attached plugin. save file
4) Go to xlights, version C. Convert vix files to xseq files
5) Use xlights to schedule songs

In your case you will produce the UserPatterns.xml because you select LSP as the sequencer.

Now if you have more than one project per song, it is a little bit more

I have 3 projects per song. First project is my 2400 node megatree
Second project are my arches, windows and eaves
third project is fire pole (trunk of my tree) and the coro star on top of the tree.

each song will therefore need 3 projects
i have 8 songs now done, 24 projects

So i do the first 2 steps
1) create the effects i will be using
2) Create a project, and run it. I output for vixen. I get a file (USERNAME~PROJECT_ID.vix). So for example f~225.vix

3 times for each song because i have 3 projects

I now run the program that stitches projects together

http://localhost/nutcracker/effects/mega_project.php?project_id=181&ss=215&pole=227&name=Amazing_Grace

This then produces a single mega vix file, it has all three projects merged together

3) Open f~181~master.vix in Vixen and assign the audio file and attach the lynx etherdongle as the attached plugin. save file
4) Go to xlights, version C. Convert vix files to xseq files
5) Use xlights to schedule songs

Thanks Sean. I will try and do the local install again. I had issues last time and gave up so I am sure that I will be asking for help. It probably not be until this weekend though! Thanks for all of the information!
