multicolored cat5 cables
« on: January 05, 2013, »
One of my goals this year it to use a different color cat5 cable in my display setup based on what signal is being carried on it.

Do any of you guys do this?

I was thinking of

DMX                                      Black
Pixelnet (4 universes)             Green
Pixelnet (1 universe + Power)  Red or Blue (whichever doesn't show up as much outside)

I came across the idea as We're remodeling our house, with each room that we do, I've been adding "pixelnet" jacks near the windows and doors. the cable inthe walls down to the patch panel, i've been using green wire to differentiate it from the blue network traffic lines.
To rule the entire tri-state area!  What's that? Perry the Platypus!!!

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, i havent decided on colors yet but it should make it easier to track things back to the hubs.

I thought about doing it then I realized that I got a better price with quantity at monoprice.  You could get the best of both worlds and do what we did in my band days, use colored electrical tape on the ends to identify the cable.  For my cables I went with green for grounds cords, and white for the house.  I know it's not recommended per se, but I used solid and made cables from cat5 I had on hand for my real long runs saving mucho moola.  No issues whatsoever...

We tried color coding Pixelnet powered/non powered, Dmx, etc... But we ended up using what we had just to get everything plugged in accordingly.  It's a good idea - just want practical for this years show.  That and a rabbit gnawed on one of my 30-foot cat5 cables.

I just label each end of my cat5 cables as to what they are "supposed to be" connected to.
I did that last year and this year cabling up all my SSCs was not a problem.

I invested in a labeler like this one:

Is there an outdoor tape that is used since the labels I made with mine (very similar) peeled off from summer heat or something?  I didn't really pay attention to this when buy the tape...

This is what I used.

i have used Brother ptouch labels on my SSCs, and my LEs with no problems.  Some of my LE labels have been on the case for a couple of years.  I have had some issues with wrapping them around wire so I tried the above and they seem to work well.  My cables were stored in a shed that gets very hot in the summer and most of them stuck very well.

I color code my Cat5. Black: DMX, Orange: Flood Lights, Red: Renards.

BTW: If you get colors like Orange or Red, the color fades quickly, I started seeing fading after their first season, especially on the Orange.
2011 Plans:
   - Second year for dimmable animation
   - 184 Channels of Blinky Flashy :D
   - 8 RGB Flood Lights
It's gonna be fun!! :D

labels are nice and all, but like this year, there was times were i was working on stuff late at night. (actually swapped an active hub at 3am) and you're holding stuff off the snow, and trying to keep snow from flying in the box while you're hooking up stuff. It's nice to be able to see a bunch of cables all the same color and know they go in the 16 ports, and then see something another color and just know that's the dmx wire..  etc...
