if you have a voltage drop over a long extension cord run. how can you overcome this? thicker gauge wiring?

Easy answer--yes.

The code allows 3% voltage drop before you should consider "upsizing" a wire.  On 110V that usually happens every 100ish feet.  One other factor is how much current you are pulling through the wire.  If you are on a 20A circuit pulling 1A, you wouldn't have to upsize for long distances maybe 200-300 or more feet.  Same circuit pulling 16A, you need to upsize sooner or 100 feet.

There are calculators online to calculate voltage drop.

Because transformers use laminated cores to reduce eddy current losses, it also means those layers can vibrate at harmonics of the AC input frequency. Vibration = noise.

YES,

Now that I don’t see the problem any more I have doubled the load I am putting on that wire.

I will keep adding to it until the problem returns, then I will get you a ladder.
