It all depends on if you like a skinny or wider tree. The default starting size is half the length

So a 10' tree, start with a 5' diameter

I hope you had a typo of 12" tall - not much of a tree :)

but still 12" would be 6" dia

12 ft will be a midi tree here but for some area a 12 ft would be mega as its bigger than any of your neighbor tree lol
usually its half of the height but there is no set rules ...cheer

I generally like a 2 (H) x 1 (W@base) ratio ... but a 5' to 6' base would probably be optimal.  If you have some sag, the 5' may look a bit narrow.  If you have no sag, the 5' could look great.

I'm not a big fan of the fat wide trees, but some people prefer them.  Going with a base diameter which optimally fits your light string lengths is another good way to go, so take you string size, maybe fold it ... then figure out whats best.  For me that a 100ct set of incan. minis, folded is around 12' hypotenuse.

The is no right/wrong answer as long as its what you like best.

i think my trees last year were too wide, so i 'm thinking of raising them 2 extra feet so i can tuck the bottoms in more.

40 nodes smart strngs,   and 50 cnt minis.

I am using the program at the URL below to set up my tree. I am using a ratio of 2.7 to 1 but may change it slightly after i get it up.

Well I suppose its all in the eye of the beholder but all of my trees use the Golden Ratio which rounds off to about 1.618:1.  Which would make the spread of a 12' tall tree around 7.4'.

i think my trees last year were too wide,

If that is the case then I would go half of the tree height, but it is like Rick said. It is all personal preference. Do what "you" like!  ;D

Yeah, well, I tend to round off pi as well.  I'm guessing you do too (or you'd never finish a computation).  Aren't continued fractions neat?
