Thanks I just picked up 90 from them

These are full cords sets not pigtails but I usually just cut off the end I don't need.

For what it's worth, I happened to make my pigtails this year by making the decision to cut my 6' extension cords in half instead of just cutting off the end I didn't need. I stored/pack ratted the other ends which came in very handy late in the season when I decided to modify my snowflake strings to control each individual string instead of using the off-the-shelf controller. Wow what a difference that made. I probably saved about $50 bucks on that little moment of decision.
I know there's a million ways of doing it but it's just a thought :)

I buy 6ft extension cords from home depot, $0.94 each.
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xh8/R-100672781/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
I think is a good deal since I split them in two and I have the power cord for my custom made trees, and I have the other end that supports 3-outlet connected to the LE.

I bought these and I like them. They are precut and eady to be tinned and installed.
http://www.americord.com/roj-to-1-15p-prod-646.html
You can call them and get a bulk quote. Last year they were .99 each shipped for 150 of them.
-
You could cut the plugs off the power extension cords here:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10228
They have 1, 2 and 3 foot lengths for $.72, $.90 and $1.08 respectively and offer volume discounts.

Just make sure you scroll toward the bottom of the page, the cords at the top are for connecting to the back of a computer.

Holy smokes, there office is 10 miles from my house sweet!!! no shipping cost.

Ok, just got 32 16/3 power cords from monoprice.com. They are pretty nice looking cords, although the exterior sheathing is a little thin (you can see/feel the twist of the wires inside it), but for the price point, they look great. IMHO. With shipping they were just over a buck a piece, in a 3ft length.
-
Does it matter if they are for Indoor Use Only?

Nah, I dont think so. That is exactly what I used, and rained crazy a couple of days with no problem. What I ended up doing, is wrapping with electrical tape to try and waterproof a little bit. I live in central ca, so I am not sure what it would do to you snow guys. Coldest it got so far this year is 28....not that I am gloating....should have seen people staring at me when I was walking through HD with to big cases of cheapy cords....quizzical looks all around. I just cut them in half.

Thanks!

Same here..... I bought 128 of them summer of 08'. They were the best deal anywhere. I looked back at my old emails and found an old correspondence with a salesman/purchaser at iofast. I sent him an email asking about the product, and if he would name his supplier. He resonded and said that the company he used to buy them at went out of buisness. He then asked if there was still a strong demand for them and if there was that he would try to find another source for them. I responded and assured him that there was indeed a STRONG demand for them and to see what he could do for us. Sound like we may need to work up another COOP!! :)
What do you guys think? Anyone else need cords? With 514 LE in the COOP now thats 8192 output channels that need cords!!
Carey
-
Coop on cords sounds good to me
-
I believe that qualifies as strong demand. A coop wouldnt hurt my feelings. Having to buy them myself will hurt my feelings! ( As it will hurt many more.) Oh well :)
-
monoprice is the cheapest place to buy these cords I bought my first one from light o Rama they sell for 30.00$ for 16 channel and don't include the power pig tail with these from monoprice you can use both ends for a good deal at .82 ;D
-
I would welcome the co-op, but I'm concerned that the savings of a few cents per cord would be lost in the co-op shipping...

I have had that concern as well. I guess would depend on how good of a deal he gives us and how many you need. They do real good on shipping. My order of 128 shipped for around $12. Not bad at all. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Let's do it get a coop on cords and enclosures too

I just asked them to quote these at bulk (for myself and out of curiousity) @ 75 and 150 units, I will post the results here.
Received the below response, notice no shipping information received, sent seperate email requesting shipping cost.
Tony
For item 58-0061-01.642 we currently only have a little over 4700 in stock.
50 $1.43
100 $1.25

Greetings,,,
The enclosures tend to cost considerably more with shipping twice. Especially since, if you buy enough to meet the required amount, that shipping is free from Broadband, as of the last few months or so. We've had a few people locally go in together to make the needed quantity. That's why we don't have the cases for LE or FS in the coops now.

Speaking of cases, I do not have enough for my current order to get the free shipping. Is there anyone if the Fort Wayne, IN area who would want to go together on some cases?
-
Has anyone looked into / heard back about a cord coop yet? With over 500 expresses in the current coop i believe there would be a HUGE demand!
-
When looked at in the past it was not worth it. The few cents savings did not add up to all the extra shipping, Shipping boxes needed an time of the coop manager.

I have contacted a manufacture in China about cords and waiting on a response back, however the min. order amount is 3000 units which if the price is right could work.

I haven't heard back. I emailed him again yesterday. Hopefully he will be able to help us out.

Definitely a concern. I would hope that iofast would see the possible demand and just give us a good deal..... maybe a coupon code or something. And just let them handle the shipping.
-
iofast doesn't seem to list the 3ft female output plugs that they had last year.
-
Personally it seems like a waste of time to pursue a cord coop. If I have 10 LEs then I would need 160 cords. I buy mine from Home Depot for .94 like lot of other people. If I saved .10 per cord we are only talking about $16. Then I add in shipping and other time constraints and to me it is not worth even thinking about. Even I was to save .20 per cord I have too many other things to worry about and for me I have a brand new HD just one mile down the road from me. I've also bought cords at Walmart for .96. Looking at 3 wire cords is a waste also since there is no grounding available with the LEs. The only thing I do different is to use 14ga input cords on the LEs, although I know of people who use the std .94 cord for their input power as well. I make my own by buying a 100ft 14ga extension cord and then cutting it into 6ft lengths.

I am asking a company in China for a quote on the min. quanity which is 3000. All of these prices are per piece and DOES not include shipping, the figures are based on 3000 units of each size. These are the regular indoor type extension cords. :o ;D

12FT USD 0.41
15FT USD 0.48
18FT USD 0.55
20FT USD 0.60

I am also getting some some quotes, but would like to get a general consensus on how many people use grounded vs. ungrounded. I personaly have always used grounded.... just in case. But in three years of doing this, I have never used a ground device connected to a controller.
So..... If we do manage to get a coop together that is worth doing, what would everyone want GROUNDED or UNGROUNDED.
Thanks,
Carey

Grounded for me do you have any pic of these

have you priced ends?

We really need to know what the shipping cost will to the COOP manager and then to the members home. That will give you a true price.

So..... If we do manage to get a coop together that is worth doing, what would everyone want GROUNDED or UNGROUNDED.
I use grounded so that I can use up all the heavy duty extension cords that I've accumulated from my static display without those grey, three-prong adapters.

if we were to get ungrounded cables, but the receptacles were so that you could plug a grounded extension cord into them, would that be ok?
-
Not at all saying this is necessary, but what I do, is run grounded input cords, and tie all the grounds together in the box. Again, not saying this is right, wrong, necessary or other wise, just what I do.

Sorry It's not an express... Please don't tar and feather me :D

Thats a nice clean install. :)
This also exactly how I have always done my controllers. (10 so far) But because the controller housing is plastic, and the devices pluging into the controllers are not grounded (light strings and such.... i realize there could be exceptions) I am beginning to question the need for the ground. That is why I am trying to get an idea from everyone else what they prefer.
Thanks for the input.

I've had good luck and good prices with Monoprice.com
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10228
These are full cords sets not pigtails but I usually just cut off the end I don't need. They have several options for length in 14, 16 and 18 AWG and their quantity pricing is really good.

Thanks just ordered 64

Wondering if anyone did the math and or received quotes back on shipping from China.
I have a few custom cable vendors I've worked with in the past for various day job needs.
One vendor that I know of will remove jacketing to order and twist and tin the ends. This type of prep work might make sense, especially considering you would not need to worry about the stripping down of an already completed cable. If done improperly or not inspected right you could expose a conductor.
-
How long of a pigtail do i need?
-
How long of a pigtail do i need?
Personal preference really. You might get away with 1' cords; however, you'll have very little slack for stripping the conductors and getting them into the case and adding strain relief to them. I would probably not go shorter than 1.5'. Some people prefer longer cords some shorter.
-
ok thanks. Im just getting other stuff bought for the le's i bought. Still waiting for 3 people to pay so they can order the parts in.
-
For my megatree, I put 6' cords on the LEs. It makes for a bit of an octopus to untangle, but I didn't need any additional cords for the megatree so it is a reasonable trade-off. For other parts of the yard I made legths depending on where the power was needed. Using SSR4s for the Icicle lights, I did 15', 6', 6', 15' for the four outputs. Again, I only neede an additional 3 foot extension for one end... For the star on my megatree, the SSR4 is mounted on the star and has only one outlet with a 15' cord. The other three circuits are wired directly into the SSR4 with no plugs...
Needless to say, I had the whole layout planned before I started buying and putting stuff together. I figure each year I will be adding to the previous year, and if I need to change the lengths, it's just a couple of screws and a zip tie per cord...

Custom lengths work great for display elements you know you will be doing over and over. I will probably end up doing custom extension outlets using SPT cord for certain elements.

I am in the garage door business. I am going to get them from old electric openers that I take down. Maybe you could find a local company that is throwing away regularly something that has a cord on it that you can cut it off of. It is just a thought. But with the cost of gas maybe not.
