when I first started looking into blinky/flashey, I bought a few blue LED strings from ebay for about $2.50 each. They are now around my beer fridge. they look, but havent thought about putting them on the house.

Tough time of year to find, but another idea would be white painted with a translucent blue?
LED's run cooler, so I would think you would have more paint options.

I just stocked up on some clear incan mini's for my Halloween and Christmas colors.
I plan on spraying with Purple and Yellow / Amber cans of translucent high heat paint.

use krylon Xmetal paint form walmart ( usually red blue and purple in syock at ours ) or true value instore or on line. I made a 6'x8' American flag for my boss for christmas using 200 ct white leds from target. 1000 in all , then I just taped off the stripes and stars and started painting. stuff works good. I will try  to post a picture when I get home so you can see the colors and how well it works

You should be concerned unless you intend to use them indoors because some of them are complete crap and will not last one season outside.
If at first you don't succeed,
your not cut out for sky diving

Here are a couple of pics of the flag I made using the x metal paint. As usual the pics do not do it justice  :)
