Greetings-
Trying to build 4 MR-16s, and several parts are on back-order with Mouser. I have found what appears to be some replacement parts, but I wanted to check with everyone to see if I am on the right track.
- Part #1: Oscillators DIP-8 5V 40MHz (Mouser #520-TCH4000-X). Replacement Part from Digi-Key: http://parts.digikey.ca/1/1/542907-osc-40-000-mhz-5-0v-1-2-size-ecs-2100ax-400.html (http://parts.digikey.ca/1/1/542907-osc-40-000-mhz-5-0v-1-2-size-ecs-2100ax-400.html)
- Part #2: IC & Component Sockets 8P ECONOMY TIN (Mouser #571-1-390261-2). Replacement Part 3M Socket from Mouser #517-4808-3004-CP: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/3M/4808-3004-CP/?qs=IGgAdOvCTsRQhEVloHjTIQ%3d%3d (http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/3M/4808-3004-CP/?qs=IGgAdOvCTsRQhEVloHjTIQ%3d%3d)
- Part #3: LED Drivers 4096 Step Grayscale LED Driver (Mouser #595-TLC5940NT). According to Mouser, this part will be shipped 10/26/2009. Replacement Part Sierra IC has 481 of these http://www.sierraic.com/pnresults.asp?part=TLC5940NT (http://www.sierraic.com/pnresults.asp?part=TLC5940NT) in stock but you have to call for the price (listed as $6.21 from Optopart.com).
Questions: Would these replacement parts work? Where else might I look? For Part #3, would it be better to take a chance and wait on Mouser or pay the extra $2/part for the parts from Sierra? Finally, have others had good experiences with Digi-Key and Sierra as vendors?
This is my first time attempting to locate alternatives, so thanks in advance for your help!

1 would be fine.
2 would be fine.
3 the link does not take me to it.
Digikey is ok I use them sometimes. But I have never used serria not sure I have ever seen them.

Thanks, RJ. I fixed the link on Part 3, so it should work now. I appreciate the feedback on both parts and vendors. BTW, I got the replacement heat-sink yesterday, and it's a perfect fit. Thanks, again!

Glad we got you fixed with a heatsink. The two parts on the link either one should work fine as the G4 number is just a new version.

Did you find a vendor that has any available, all the vendors I checked were back-ordered?

No. The one lead with parts in stock (Sierra IC) had a minimum order of $100, and the price of each part was $2 more than other vendors. Therefore, I went ahead and placed the order with Mouser. The back-order ship date is 10/27/2009, which is not too late for me. If you can wait, Mouser's the best bet in my opinion.

Does anyone have 1 TLC5940 that they don't need right away?
I've had this part on backorder with Mouser since the middle of September. Every time I call them, I get a different answer - "It shipped today", "TI hasn't delivered yet", "It should be coming in tomorrow".
I just got an updated "will ship when all parts are in" email notice that said they would ship the 2 for my MR16 boards on 11/13.
I really would like to get one of my MR16's up and running before the middle of November.
Any help is appreciated.

Just a heads-up to anyone who's still trying to get the TLC5940NT chip. It's still on backorder, even though I've called several times. Mouser said that they have been having problems getting TI to meet their ship committments, but this is ridiculous. Current date for next shipment from TI (when you click on the part number on Mouser's site) is 11/30.
Other sites that I've checked are not in stock either.
A kind person here on DLA did send me one that got my MR16 up and running. When I get mine, I'll be sending one back his way...

Might the TLC5941NT work? It appears similar but I've not dug into the details.

Not sure, I am not familiar with it and might be a little while before I can read up to see. But TI does build a lot of similar drivers.

Just did a quick compare.. the TLC5941 is limited to 90ma output whereas the TLC5940 is 130ma. Excluding the EEPROM that is on the TLC5940, the two chips are otherwise identical. That output current coiuld be a real limitation for some. If one is only driving a few leds in a village or trainyard it might not be an issue but when you are trying to drive a string of leds....

Doesn't the 5940 just drive the MOSFETs? With a 4k7 Rset resistor, it's only putting out 9 mA, so this limit shouldn't be a problem.

Is the EPROM feature needed or are we just driving the MOSFETs via instructions from the PIC?
I'd like to get more of a definite "yes" from the man himself before I just order the new chips.
Got an email from Mouser last night confirming the "expected" 11/30 new ship date...

If what moose is saying is correct then it should work fine. I can't say as I have never tried it and have so much going on, time to research it is short.

Has anyone attempted to run a MR16 with the 5941 part? I would be interested to know the status of any experiments that have been done.
I am ordering a set for my MR16s anyways but would like to know if anyone has had success.
Thank You,
Frank

FWIW, TI had the TLC5940NT back ordered to Jan. 12 and when I checked on Wednesday, they'd moved the date to Jan. 30.

And my Mouser backorder from 9/30/09 is still unfilled. They just moved the date to Feb 9 for shipping.

And my order, direct from TI, has been pushed out to Feb. 12.

That LED Driver is turning out to be scarce.

I did a quick search through Octopart and found that a few appear to be in stock at
http://www.sierraic.com/pnresults.asp?part=TLC5940NT (http://www.sierraic.com/pnresults.asp?part=TLC5940NT)
The price appears to be $6.21 each. Hopefully there is some kind of qty discount but you won't know till you connect with them.
Larry
I just rread the previous posts and saw the minimum order requirement... still an option but the premium price and minimum requirment make this one a tuff bite to swallow. Larry.

Hi,
I notified on TI site, the TLC5940NT is a discontinued product.
Production will be only for spares with limited qty (existing running products, but not anymore for standard production)... FYI...
So, in theory, the TLC5941NT can match, but there are 2 important parameters
to take care... As we do not have the schematics of the MR16, the major differences
are : less mA , pin 27 and pin 19. Means we need to know how these pins are wired with 5940 NT and check if the internal EEprom was really used on MR16 controller or not.
So investigation to do on actual PCB.
Now for the Less current on 5941, if it's enough to activate the gate of the N Mosfeet, so it can match too..
For moment i will need to check and update you...
Maybe someone have done this too?
Henri
-
I use the 5940 on my Blizzard units and got an email from TI saying they were gone. The one major difference is the output per channel is lower, but other than that it is pretty much the same.
-
Agree with you...
I think we can use the TLC5941Nt instead TLC5940...
I'm waiting the parts from Mouser, and i will update you.
So main PB, i'm Frenchy guy, so shipment will take some weeks..
My personnal thinking : why TI decided to stop this device?
Means new one will replace it and will request new development?
Strange, but this is the reality....
I'm very glad as Mouser got an agenda for the ordered POs, but i'm not very confident, why they stopped such sucessfull chip...
For my part, i decided to go to full LED Xmas design this year, and MR16 board seems to be the best we can found today...
Ok, you have also the alternative to go to "H.Hölscher" device, where you can go to 64 channels, after making your own design, but without dimmer option....
So i'm very happy to join this community, even if i'm located in France...
Thanks to all you for your inpunts...
Best regards from France...
Henri ;)

I should clarify my previous post as I was at work and had to type fast...haha
The pin outs of the 5941 are exactly the same as the 5940. The outputs handle currents that are 20 mA less than the 5940. There also is a different with the EEPROM, which I don't remember exactly but as long as RJ isn't using that, the 5941 should be fine. Of course RJ will have the final say on that.
-
As posted earlier on I think it should work fine. Just can't promise till someone tries it.

My order for the TLC5940-NT from TI has now been pushed out to Feb. 24 (there was a Feb. 18 push-out in there that I didn't chronicle earlier).
I had a big (for me) order at the Mouse that I did just a minute ago and I threw in a TLC5941-NT and will substitute it on a known working Lynx MR16 board when the guy in the brown truck stops by.

Hi Any Feedback on positive try?
I got my parts from Mouser, mounted the first Board but i was blocked on progamming the PIC 18F1220. I have an universal programmer (TOP2049), but not so universal than that... It cannot programm this one ( a lot of PIC possibilities excepts this 18Fxx series)...
So waiting my pickit 2 from Mouser now...
So i have TLC 5941NT arrived and no possibilty to try it...
I expect this try in one week....
Cheers... Henri

Henri:
The box from Mouser with the TLC5941-NT is sitting here -- I haven't had a chance to open it up and catalog the contents (busy week).
I should get to it in a day or two and give you the word one way or another.

Greetings,,,
Probably spending time off at the movies or something.
;D

Keith:
Yes, the movies. But to take a day off in the middle of the week, you have to do all the Wednesday stuff on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, thereby eating into your hobby time.

Big news...
TLC5941NT works like a charm.... You can use it...
just finished 2 MR16 and this is fantastic....
You can also use : 521-TCH4000-X (Mouser) as oscillator 40 Mhz, works too.
Very surprised about Mouser : order placed day1 and delivery appened Day3 in France by Fedex (free shipment and free customs too).
Happy user...
Cheers... Henri ;)

Greetings,,,
Glad to hear it worked okay. And that you can get parts quickly.

How did that happen Henri?
John
-
Hi John,
On their disclamer, Mouser send for free uper 60€ in the basket.
Also their take in charge the customs costs...
So very good for foreign country and customers like me...
This is the second time in 15days i placed an order and it was simply Perfect and Fast.
I still get the parts for the DMX dongle....
Waiting now for the Boards on just finished coop...
Actually for the tests, i used a compatible DMX enttec dongle to work on.
Henri ;)
-
Thanks Henri... I wonder if that works for me in Bangkok too.
John
-
Hope so...
One ting is sure, the TCL 5040-NT is really out of production....
The last items will be deliverered hasardously...
So let's go to 5041-NT.....
By the way, still old component...
As today, LED is the more convenient....
Why don't adapt the schematics to newest one?
Agree 110v or 220v matches with commun bubs...
But think to save the planet... Low consuption is better for you and your bullet, even for christmas...
this year, will be for me 100% LED. and i'm building my own led strips with molds and transparent resign...
I will post as it's ready...
Cheers... Henri ;)

Well Mouser must have finally got the TLC5940NT in stock because I got a shipping notification today that my back order of them has shipped. :o There website is still showing them as on order until 4/5, but they must have received some of them. Just have to wait and see when they come. <wd..
-
Five months and eight slipped shipping date emails later, I, too, got an unexpected notification from Mouser. Parts will be here tomorrow. I had given up hope. One small consolation -- Mouser paid the shipping charges.
-
<la..
Ditto on the surprise shipment notification - from an order placed last September.
-
Since the TLC5940NT is available again, is that the better driver to use on the MR-16 board?

I've run the same sequence side-by-side with two Lynx MR16 boards, one with the 40 and one with the 41, and they look exactly the same to me.
I would say save the 11 cents and go with the 41. ;) ...

I noticed that the Oscillator (Mouser 520-TCH4000-X) that is listed on the BOM for the MR16 was also used on the DMX Dongle ver 1.0. It has been replaced by a new part (Mouser 815-ACH-40-EK) on the DMX Dongle ver 2.0. Can anyone confirm if this new, and less expensive, part (815-ACH-40-EK) can be used on the MR16s. Thanks
Alan T

Greetings,,,
You may be looking at an older BOM. The part 815-ACH-40-EK is on the current BOM, etc.
Keith
-
Keith, You are correct. I was looking at the BOM I had printed out when I originally ordered my boards.
I will make a mental note to check the wiki for the current BOMs.
Thanks for the assistance.
