Was not totally sure which was in the ic socket was pin 1..

they are upside down.
the dot represents pin1.
the concave arc on the board has pin1 at that location (to the left of the arc)

And they are not real forgiving about orientation when you have one flipped and apply power (of course I KNEW that i put one in wrong that time, I was just testing a theory...
..)
