Title: Will these work with the SSC's
Post by: bwhite505 on July 25, 2011,
Does anyone know if these are compatible with the Smart String controllers?

Thanks,

nothing else in the Wiki listed light strings uses the TM1803 chip, and the listing for them does not have the specs listed.  They are from the same MFG - Rita

Don't know if these are some of the new ones RJ was looking at or not - think I will throw Ray a note and see what he says....

The tester Ray sells that lists our compat LED modules, also lists this 1803 chip set that it can control/test as well - so they might be compat - am waiting on Ray's reply

The 18xx family of chips support several different data rates that are set by a pin on the chip. We use the 800khz data rate. If those are set for 400 or 1600(?) Khz they won't work.

The controller from Ray also allows you to adjust the data rate ... but that doesn't mean it'll work with a SSC.  But I will say that "I think" the SS flex strips use a higher data rate (on the ray controller) and a lower rate on the modules and nodes (I think) ... so perhaps they might work.

I ordered the 4x5050 (4 RGB LEDS each) square modules which have R,G,Y wiring and they work the same as SS modules, but use slightly more power, so have a max modules limit of 80 to 90 instead of 120 (for the square metal backed modules).  I just ordered them and gave them a shot it was a bit of a gamble on my part, but they were TM1804 and not TM1803.

Still waiting on Ray's response....  :-\

Ray does not know. Do not spend lots of money until you test.  They always so yes. It is just a culture thing.
The last new item I got to test did not.

I think I am going to order a string a see if they work. If not they are not that expensive and I'm sure I could find another use for them.

is the data rate settable in the pic or hardcoded?

ya, not that expensive if you use post - but it can take up to 30 days to get them  :-\

They are coming DHL with some sample covers he is sending me.  We will see.  This is my first order from him.

The current firmware for the SSC only supports the "fast" (800 KHz) data rate.

Can the firmware be updated to support the "slow" (400 KHz) data rate?
Maybe, but it involves more than just the SSC firmware. It would also require a change to the SSC programming utility to select which speed to use. Then it would have to be tested to make sure it works correctly, and then finally released. With all of the other things he is working on right now, I think this would be a very low priority - but hey, what do I know...

Just fiddling with my nodes and the tester from Ray, the strings and 4x5050 square nodes that I have will run on the slow speed. The rigid strips will not.

did you get these yet and are they compatable?

Thanks

I have not got them yet.  According to DHL they are in Van Nuys so I would guess first thing next week.

Hm.. slow

I have gotten both of my orders (not these modules) in less than a week...

I got them this afternoon.  I'm not sure what is going on with them.  With the ssc test firmware they all light up random colors with the exception of red when it is on red only the first node lights up.  I have tried cutting out the first node with no change in the strings behavior.  I then cut the string in half with no change either.  I'm also not very happy with the quality.  Lots of gaps in the epoxy filling to allow water in and they have the smaller gauge aluminum wire RJ warned about.  I will try and post a video of them so you can see their strange behavior.  Maybe they are not compatible?????

I also got some sample C9 covers for the nodes from Ray.  He was supposed to send me clear ones but he sent colored.  Hard to tell how they would look on the nodes since they are not clear.  They are faceted and would probably look pretty good if they were clear.

This was my first order with Ray kinda disappointed.

Yeah 1st time he sent me an actual c9 replacable bulb. I told him it didn't matter since it was green. Then he forgot entirely the next 2 shipments. Then the last was clear but not faceted so it was like the bulb was not even on the node. It was invisible.

Here is a short video of the modules with the SSC test firmware.

Maybe you need to just try the SSC with software to control it instead?

I would possibly try each of the SS node types to see if any worked better than the other, since the RGB order
isn't known for sure.  Also, you might try making the first node  NULL node, to see what that does.

The pixelnet plugin for vixen should work find for testing.

I have tried various combinations of programming the SSC to control these.  The most I have made them do is light the first node red. Tried null on the first node. Every combination of node type and string or individual control.  I guess they are not compatible.

If anyone wants to give them a try let me know.

I was interested in using these on a project because they would fit perfect for what I want to do.... as any additional testing been done, or are they just flat not going to work?

If you can maybe send me a couple of nodes - we can do some testing on the chips to see if it is even possible....  PM me if interested...
