Post by: onesmoothhead on January 16, 2012,
Any suggestions I could really use the help. I am running XP standalone and using the eithernet port. I have wireless off when I try to connect and I get the message of low or no connectivity. <fp.

Any suggestins would be greatly appreciated.

Do the indicator lights act like you have connection?

if you're wired directly into your eD. you might need to assign a static IP address to your network connection (since it's not getting it from a DHCP server)

RJ yes the lights are blinking on the ports. I was wondering if I would need to assign the static IP address. I will need to learn how to do assign IP's i guess.

the easiest is to plug the eD into a router, or switch that you normally plug your laptop into.

An IP address is not necessary for either the wired PC/Laptop NIC nor the Etherdongle.  It all works with multicast addresses and neither of them requiere and IP address to be configured.  I have a wireless connection on my laptop, but use the wired port for the etherdongle.  The wireless laptop connection has an IP address it gets from the router, but has nothing to do with the wired NIC.   The wired NIC does not have an IP address assigned.  I do not think the etherdongle even attempts to get and IP address from your router.  A straight-thru patch cable may work between the computer and the etherdongle, but I'm not sure.  I use a crossover cable between the ED and my laptop.  Hope some of this helps.

on some computers, the nic needs a static ip address for the operating system to see the network connection as useable.

Just an update. I did some testing and found that my Pickit3 is not working. I guess it died. I have used it for two years, but I tried programing other PICs I know I have been able to program and they fail also.  A new one is on the  way.  I can not even get a check sum from the old one. I let you know if that was the problem when I get it on Tuesday.  Thanks again.

I programmed the PICk tonight and I get connectivity through a hub.  I do not direct but it is an old XP machine and I will try a crossover cable and see if I can connect direct to the cpu.  Thank you all for the help.  Kevin

I had to use a crossover cable and a static IP on my laptop.

To connect your computer to the ED you must use a crossover cable, from a internet hub you do not use a crossover cable.

The internet hub does the crossover for you.

most computers is recent years support MDI-X which does the crossover for you.

This computer is over 8 years old. It is really only used for testing and building shows stuff. I am sure it will be fine when I connect my crossover. I know it will not assign an IP when connected direct. Hence, the low or no connectivity I am not sure it would assign an IP, but it does not even see the Ed without the hub.  Thank you all for the help.

Just built my eD. Having a vixen issue.  Throws a plugin error something about line array.

Direct hookup with older pc.  Led lights, mag jack lights, pic programmed ok, made crossover cable and static ip. Appears to program ss fine. Any thoughts?  Thanks

Did you dl the plugin with firefox?

If so you got a corrupted download thanks to firefox. Use Chrome or IE if you have to and try again

Thanks Rick, but I used IE to download since I had other issues with ff.  Good idea though.  Guess there's no sense in procrastinating any longer I should just grab lsp while it's on sale and get familiar with it.

Good news is I think my etherdongle is pretty close to being functional.
