Title: LED Driver IC replacement or not
Post by: wftxlites on December 25, 2014,
What was the outcome for the LED Driver IC being discontinued.  Is there a replacement?

I don't know about a replacement but I found some on ebay to be able to finish the boards I have!!!!

That is my problem. I have two boards to finish. Maybe the next LE Coop will offer parts less the board.  I'm almost afraid to wait if I can find IC now.  I know they are available in lots, but I don't need 500 or 1000.  The stock is getting short since they are discontinued.

Maybe someone has a couple they could sell me.

Ordered a couple of them as suggested eBay for the cheapest price. Two shipped from China about $12.50 arrived today.

Tested them and they work perfect in one of my assembled LE's.  I was a bit Leary because the numbers at the bottom of the chip are different.  Turns out that doesn't matter, just so they are Part# SAA1064.

Now hopefully, the next LE Coop offers parts less the board.

Thanks Again,

Greg

May be a silly question, but do you need this for the board to actually work or just to be able to see the LEDs for changing the settings (in other words can I use one from another board when I need to see the LEDs and then take it out and have the board still operate)?

yes, it should work as long as it is SAA1064. Good price!

It may be possible that you don't need it, but never tried without the chip inserted. It is just a driver for the 7 segment LED's as far as I know. I'll bet the pic just transmits HEX code to the driver IC for it to display the start channel. There is most likely a memory location in the pic where the start address is stored.  If that is known then the memory location could probably be set using PICKIT3 and then downloaded to the pic. The start channel will need to be entered in HEX, I believe. The checksum will change on the pic once that is done, so don't be alarmed by that. I know that this works on SSR4 pic chip.
