Title: Yet more late videos NOW WITH RGB LUMINARY VID
Post by: zwiller on January 04, 2012,
I have to thank RJ and everyone here for making this place as cool and helpful as it is.   <res.

Taped 3 days ago after our first snow.  Looking for new ideas for this year.

Thinking of getting of rid of most of the luminaries.  They just didn't really perform like they look like they would in adjustable preview.  Might add two mega trees on each side.  Another aether II under the entrance instead of the spot light which "showcases my swag" as my wife puts it.  Maybe some smart string window frames and a smaller rgb northstar on top of the entrance.  What would you do???

Comments, suggestions, ridicule, and sarcasm encouraged.   ;D

Looks good. I like those little luminaries. The one thing I would do is get another flood light for the porch,
like you said.

The constant "ON" of the porch light was so bad, and so distracting, I had to kick my dog three times.
(Ridicule and sarcasm, as you asked)    ;)

I like the Wish Liszt Song. I have not heard that one before.

The spot light on the front door was mostly distracting but at times it almost provided a surreal effect when the house was all blue from the Aethers. The luminaries was fine with me and it provides a little something different. Of course changing up the layout each year also doesn't hurt. So if you don't use them next year don't get rid of them.

7/10 points  <la..  Keep em coming!

Talked to the missus about the porch light and she's OK if I run an aether ll (my family loves them) on the porch during the show but run the spot after the show.  That means I need another one! 8)

The luminaries are cottage cheese containers.  Large commercial ones though.  I get em free  ;D from the missus at the school cafeteria where she works.  I drill a large hole in the bottom, feed in a single c9 attached to one lawn stake and push it down to the ground.  Easy and cheap.  I was toying around the notion of throwing a square rgb node in some and have a look see.  Kinda concerned how to hook em up though they are spaced 4' apart.

Incidentally, I run the luminaries in a slooooow fading chase pattern after the show with no music as late as I want and they are really mesmerizing.  Actually, keeping them on after the show was the wife's idea.

I really like what you did. You did a great job of the sequencing... specifically how certain groups of lights act as "one" or an "instrument". I also love your razor sharp light timing with the music and voices. I personally like smaller yards like yours where the house is the center of attention. Well, maybe I say that because I have a small yard.  ;)

But you can do a lot more with the Aethers than just Red, Green, and Blue. You can mix Red and Blue to get Purple! Or Green and Blue to get a nice Teal! (was that sarcastic enough?) And if you vary the intensities of each to be less than 100%, the selection of colors will make your head spin! (okay, I'll stop there)

I personally like the luminaries; they are something different compared to what I've seen in hundreds of other videos. And I imagine that the storage of them is easy.

with a third aether for the porch, you can turn it on white (maybe not full on) and will still get a spotlight of your front door.
maybe even while the illuminaries are dancing.

Looks great to me! The luminaries add a lot of fill to the yard and the snow just makes everything glow that much better.  The porch posts are a fav...they have a lot of potential for colors. Real nice job on the window frames too. My windows are kinda lame this year, I only managed to get one frame done before getting distracted and just settling for saggy light strings across the rest.

Thanks for sharing,
Mike E.

Very nice sequencing.  Wish I could do something original, but I have absolutely no musical sense or artistic ability.

You got it.  I basically make the layout a big band if you will.  As a musician, this approach works for me.  The ideas for sequencing come easy for me (daughter helps too).  Although I don't despise the grid with vixen I wonder if LSP would make things faster.  Tempted to snag it while on sale since I am not sure if vixen 3.0 will get out of beta by showtime.

NO; teal is not sarcastic enough!  Pink maybe, but not teal.  Also acceptable would be mauve or lavender.   ;D

So I guess the luminaries will make the cut.  Gonna try a square rgb node with one and see if I can figure out a way to wire em.

Meman,
Although the frames the were kind of labor intensive to make last year they were a joy this year when all I had to do was zip tie em up and plug in.  Hoping to convert them to smart strings if budget allows.  I really like your show.  Huge amount of lights.  Especially like the strobes.

Thanks for the input!

Zwiller,

I love seeing what other folks do for a 'small footprint' yard (I live in a townhouse).  You really knocked it out of the park with this show.  Thoroughly enjoyed watching the videos.  I look forward to your show next year! *smile*.

How do the luminaries compare size wise to a large chinese soup take out container?

This is my "peaceful" display. TSO Christmas Canon. Still piecing together the video for 3 other songs. Multi-track editing is not fast.

Only two LEs in the display this year (spiral tree is one of them). One MR16 controlling some spots. D-Light's Firefli controllers (converted to DMX) running the arches and on the roof. The 16 Bellagio Poles are all incandescent. This may be their last year. Time will tell.

We love our chinese food too (and typically get it on Fridays!) but our chinese food containers for soup here are clear.   >:(  Also the cottage cheese containers I am using are a bit larger.  Measured one and it's 8" tall with a diameter of 6".  Pic attached.  Did some quick googling and found them! http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=24752&catid=574&clickid=popcorn (http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=24752&catid=574&clickid=popcorn)  90% sure mine are 32oz but I didn't keep the lids.  I will look into this and let you know.  That said, any decent size will do.  If you really are into finding some free I am sure you can find some.  Our small school goes through like 4-8 a week.

Mine have lids that are screened so I didn't use them but I haven't had any problems over 3 seasons.  That said, I probably will use lids if I convert them for square nodes.  Combination of protection and light diffusion that I continue to see in rgb discussions.

First year I kept 8 on a single channel for both sides of the walkway.  Real nice.  Think I converted the missus to blinky with em actually.  2nd year 8 discrete down the walkway and family dug em, this past year 24 all discrete.  Probably the coolest part is the post show slow fades.

a few minutes ago, i just played the first video again...  my daughter (2 yrs old) who was watching a tv show that she really likes (it's hard to get her attentiion when she watches this show) got up, came over to watch the video, and was dancing in time to the music, while moving her hands to some of the lights in the show.

for my own show, she justs looks at the smart string mega tree and says "pretty"

SS Mega Tree (insert emoticon for "I am not worthy")  Waaay out of my blinky budget.

my version of the ss mega tree was actually affordable, it has 640 smart string nodes
(i didn't buy the nodes all at once, i bought is stages - i know it's cheaper to get it all at once, but i couldnt afford it all at once.)

then, one hub, and 8 smart string controllers run it.

each string in 80 nodes, run from the bottom up 40 nodes, then double backed down to make it look like there were 16 strings.

Great job Jon!  Real nice display.  Loved the keys: very original.  Also love the Nutrocker vid from last year too.

If anyone was following this thread then here is a video of one dumb square module from Holiday Coro attached to the 3 channel dmx module to etherdongle.  It is just laying in the bottom of the luminary/cottage cheese container.  Output is as good as a c7 incan.  Colors are vibrant!  I feel that my iphone is excerbating the red overtone of the "warm white" and affected by the brief flashes.  I do plan on some sort of white correction but it really isn't that bad in real life.  I was happy with the outcome since this was my first experience with a 3 led module.  Will be going the smart versions from Ray in the end.

The luminaries are a great idea. One node, not too expensive, lots of colors and light. Thanks for sharing. I think many displays will have luminaries this year (mine included).

Luminaries were definitely cool, front porch posts -- nice.    Windows Yes!  Perhaps turn the front of the porch into a giant arch?  Definitely get the aether II.  Excellent sequences.

Zwiller,

Great sequencing.  I loved your show.

Now as for the luminaries.  Love them.  I've been trying to figure out how to do something similar for a couple of years.  OK, I've been thinking about it for that long.  I was thinking some sort of mini tree, but I think I like your idea better.  I think I'll get some similarly sized containers and see what I like, lights inside or the square RGB modules.

How far can we have the square 3 LED SSC modules spaced on a smart string?  Anybody know off the top of their head?  (I know, it is probably in the wiki)

Thanks for all the kind words.  It's nice to see some folks appreciate the effort I put into my sequencing.  I don't want to put up 100k lights (nor can I afford to) so I want maximum impact from each of my elements.  I really think the tighter the sequencing the more the wow factor.

The luminaries in the vid are spaced about 4' apart.  I plan to keep the spacing the same with the square nodes.  IIRC spacing for nodes could be as much as 6' but 4' is preferable.  Larger spacing apparently causes some data errors.  Remember you can still put in a null node if you want farther.

To me, the coolest part the luminaries is that they have a very big impact for the price.  I am wondering how cool these would be set to blue with some snow on the ground?
