This coop is for the soldering practice kit.
More information, including schematics and BOM can be found at http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=2429.msg26979#msg26979
Kits are $7 each in quantity 25, but the costs really won't go down as quantities go up as we are dealing with jellybean parts that are already quite cheap. Many of them (likely dozens) will fit in a $4.95 USPS box.
The coop will close March 17th, 8PM EDT.
As with any Co-Op this Co-Op is subject to the forum rules. These rules can be reviewed using the following link.

By joining this Co-Op you also agree that the Co-Op manager, DLA (as a board to also include all administrators, moderators, and members) shall not be held for any liability. You are joining this Co-Op at your own risk.
This coop has two options:
Kit 1 - All components are through-hole
Kit 2 - All components other than the battery snap are surface mount
Either kit includes the pcb and all components. The only other thing you will need is solder, tools, and a 9V battery.
Post in this thread and state the quanitity of each flavor kit you need.

Thank you

Can it be hooked up to the MR16 for power?

Both the 555 and 4017 are spec'ed up to 15V, so it should work. You may want to change the two 1K resistors to something a little bit larger, but even at 1k, it's just running 15mA to the LEDs.
The kits come with red LEDs, but the circuit should work with any color by also changing those 1k resistors.

Please put me down for 3 of the number one (1) kits.
Thank You so much.

Will these have an instruction manual? I've never done surface-mount soldering before... and it sounds to be a bit tricky.
On that note, are all controllers in the Lynx line through-hole?

On larger parts it is not hard. I do recommend you have one of the magnifying desk lamp units. You should think of one of these even for the through hole we are doing. I use mine every time I solder and can not picture not having it. They can be bought for like $40 on the internet.
All controllers are at this time but I have on that is being readied for beta testing that uses surface mount with the largest of the parts to keep it easy. It could not be reasonable done any other way.
I try to keep it all through hole but we are going to be pushed to surface mount sooner than most think the way things are going. Like the TLC5940 chip everyone is waiting on for the MR16 controllers. The manufactors don't want to make stuff that is not surface mount cause only hobbiest want to use it anymore. The manufactors have all went to SMD long ago. So the dip stuff will get harder and harder to get and no new stuff will come out in it soon.
As long as the parts are not the small stuff it is easy enough. The stuff I am working with is about the size of a 1/8 watt resistor but without the leads.

Hey Mike - Great idea.
We have a Mini coming up in April and we are offering a solder class.
If the coop closes at March 17th I should have them by April 22nd. Right?
(barring any parts backorders)
Thanks,
Kevin
-
Certainly should have them before April 22. PCBs will take a week or so to get, and the rest of the parts have multiple substitutes available, so I don't expect any shipment delays. I will have assembly manuals available, and hopefully an assembly video too.

If you have a harbor freight close to you, they have one which looks identical to the one from Amazon and it is $15.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66398 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66398)
That is what I use and it works well. Sometimes hard to adjust and get it to stay put, but it looks like the one on Amazon is the same way according to the reviewers.

Thanks Scott <res.

I came home today and found a Mouser box waiting for me - the ESD foam for shipping the chips in this coop (I wanted to buy it before they sold out) and the resistors (I needed them for another project and they are enough in lots of 100 or 200 so that's what I buy if I need more than one or two of a value). Oh and LED drivers and micro-SD sockets for another project...
There are just 12 more days left in this coop.
/mike
-
Just a reminder - one week left on this coop.
/mike
-
ten of kit # 1
six of kit #2
Thanks!
-
I will take 10 kits of the #1 please.
Thank you,

Put me down for 2 of kit 1 please
Thanks!

Just a reminder - this coop closes tonight (3/17) at 8PM EDT.
/mike
-
OK, the coop is closed. I'll send out PMs with the totals as soon as I verify that component costs haven't gone up. Thanks.
/mike
-
PMs just went out. The cost ended up being $6.50 per kit.
/mike
-
I just picked up a package from the post office - the PCBs are here; as soon as the parts arrive, I will build one to make sure there are no issues, and to take pictures for the assembly guide.
/mike

Mike,
What is the PCB strip of leds?
Dan
-
Yeah - I want some of the those falling led lights too!
Mike,

Hi Mike,
Can you tell us more about your LED PCB/Project?
Humm... Seems very interesting : 16 led per modul?
Cheers, Henri ;)
-
In addition to the soldering kits, I also got some protos for another project I am playing with. The LED boards are for a snowfall light; I will post more about them once I get one set loaded and some code written for them. And for the sharp-eyed folks out there, the last mystery board was a double RJ45 breakout (2 connectors in parallel, broken out to header strips), for breadboarding or for my status display, since I forgot the input connector on them ::)

I (with a lot of help from my daughter Alyssa) finished sorting the parts for the through-hole kits. Tomorrow I will start sorting the SMT ones. I'm exhausted after 50 kits with 25 parts each; I don't know how JJ and RJ survive the 100-500 kit sorting.
/mike

Thank You! Your efforts are appreciated.

After a little delay due to the holidays, and half the family stuck in bed with a stomach bug, I got the SMT kits sorted today. They are even more of a pain to kit than the TH ones... Tomorrow for boxing them and then to the post office, and I still need to get the assembly manual done before people start receiving them.

YEA!!! ;D
Thank You
