Title: What have I done wrong
Post by: dgreen on November 01, 2012,
Hey all,
I have built my ED, hub, and SSC's.
the SSC's are V2. I program them with RJ's program and everything is good.

Now I go and make the V3 mod.
Hardware wise this is pretty basic. I cut the trace and solder the wire.
now i flash it with the V3 firmware (smart+string+controller+modded.hex)
then i download the update (smart+string+utility.zip) and extract the exe
I copy the exe into the same SS utility i was using and try to flash.
The yellow light on the ED flashes but the lights do not.
Am I missing something?
Thanks

If you havn't already tried, you might want to try the test firmware for the v3.

If you used a PICKIT3 to program the V3 firmware in the modded SSC's did you get a checksum of ED60?  There is discussion in another thread about a possible issue with the firmware file.  If you don't get the ED60 checksum value you should investigate further.

i have 7 ssc's v3 that i just used for halloween. i used a 220 ohm resistor to replace the 49 ohm.

i used the modified hex file, and pickit 3 and got the ed60.
Nothing worked and gary (pk) helped me by showing that i had connected the jumper wire to pin 15 instead of pin 14 on the pic. i made that change and everything worked. I kept the lead length from 3pin connector to first pixel to about 18".

at first i thought there was an error because the utility program keeps sending and never stops. gary told me that was by design.

Yes I get a checksum of ED60.
i have confirmed i am soldered to the correct pin.
However, I have not replaced the resistor.
Is that what is causing my problems?
Can I not program them without changing the resistor?
Thanks.

Yes try replacing the resistor first. I seem to remember on the first v3 mod someone said it wouldn't work right unless the resistor was replaced first.

What resistor are you using.  If you are using the 49 ohm resistor, that could possibly damage the PIC.  It really need to upped to at least 200 ohms.  Did you have the program jumper in place when you set the start channel ans string type in the utility?

Sean,

I hope that's a typo as the jumper wire in the mod should go to pin 15 in the PIC.

that was it!
I found a resistor and made the change.
It is working on V3 now!
Thanks.
