Passing along the info for my fellow DLAers :D
For those who are in the market for a pic programmer I stumbled on this...20% off a pickit 3.

What all do you actually have to have to program the chips here?
-
You would need the Pickit-3
-
Almost everything RJ designs has a header so all you need is a Pickit programmer, with the exception of the Dongle.
Almost everything can be programmed with a Pickit 2, with the exception of the EtherDongle.
Finally, if you buy things from a Coop, you will probably already have the chips programmed.
You could also ask a fellow member to program chips for you too.
Last but not least, it is nice to be able to program you own chips.
-
So Brian,
Is it safe to say that if we get the Pickit 3 that we will be able to program anything we get? Looking more so at the EtherDongle, SSR4, Smart Strings?

Im looking at getting this set-up. With this you will be able to program a majority if not all the stuff you need to here.

The problem with the Pickit 2 is that it is being phased out and I doubt that any furhter updating will be done with it so even here withRJ using newer and more powerful Pics, its days are numbered. I would also not count on the chip being programmed in the coops as many of the new devices can run different versions of the firmware so there is no point in pre-programming the chips. While there are members willing to do some of the programming, the ever increasing numbr of new members buying equipment is making depending on that impractical.

While that is a nice setup, I doubt that you will need all of those adapter boards so unless you intend to do some developing of your own, why spend money on what you don't really need.

The seller of the item on ebay "j1sys" is very reputable. They also sell programmer with single adapter.

this is what i have...
even though you can program most of the newer stuff onboard, sometimes it is nice to have the programmer boards, in case you want to at least rule out the pic, in troubleshooting.

So if you purchase the item in the original link of this thread then you'll be good for the stuff here at DLA?

Most stuff here you will be good with just the Pickit3.
If you wanted to have a zif socket for the Programmer and you didn't buy it from J1sys,
I personally have this one and have been happy with it.

Maybe something like this would be the most economical

at this price I would almost bet it is a pic kit clone. Please note I am only guessing and could be wrong

Get the Pickit3 and the Ziff Socket for the same price as the Pickit3 with 20% off! Gotta love free stuff!!
Thanks sebjsan

Yes the one referenced above by Sebastian is a Clone Pickit 3.
I have the Pickit 2 Clone from Sure Electronics that I bought as a set with the zif Socket and have had only a few problems with the Pickit Clone.
Some people though, have had nothing but problems with the Clone Pickits.
I wanted to be on the safe side so when I bought the Pickit 3, I bought the real one.
-
Did somebody mention free shipping on this deal? I didn't see that.
-
If you can get a hold of a .edu address you can get 25% off the pickit from the Microchip website. this would make the Pickit 3 $33.71

Yeah, mine is red. The ones on that link are grey. Perhaps they're grey market products?

Take note in the listing it states that it is a clone of the Pickit3, who knows if it will support all software upgrades that Microchip brings out over time. Been down that road before. I will not buy anything that is not the real thing again

Have the same board works good and its cheap ::) Although I did take off the top cover because it was a pain to release the socket handles with the cover on it allows me to plug the the Pickit directly to the board.

I'd also stay away from the clone there are some good deals on the "real thing".
