Title: EtherDongle - Built how to verify with vixen- Help
Post by: TexasStingray on March 25, 2012,
Ok, I just built my Ether Dongle, Programmed it for PixelNet (I have verified by PixelNet Hub and lights with my USB Dongle), Pluged the Dongle into the network and powered it up and the green LED lights up. The WIKI states "The LED is NOT a power indicator. Its a indicator that the pic is working and communicating", when I try to use vixen to access it I get no lights to come one. When I click on the setup for the plug-in am I supposed to get something to configure. I am using Verizon FIOS and here is the hardware info.

Firmware Version:  1.03.00.08
Model Name: A90-9100EM15-10
Hardware Version: B

Is there some type of configuration that I am missing.

First step is to get a network cable and plug it in direct to the computer. make sure it is working first and then you can move it out to the network. This helps you form having many things that could casue you problems. Once you know the ETD is working it is simple to know what is wrong after that.

Does the cable have to be a gross over cable, or just a standard cable.

If your computer is fairly new it normal does not it will auto MDX. But if it does not work try a cross over.

Ok, so I got it to work. Here is what I figured out if it's not on the wiki some where we may want to add it. First the computer must be hard wired to the network not wireless. In Vixen the profile that I was using had to have 4096 channels. Thanks for the Advise RJ I did not know I could hook it up directly to the computer. maybe where should be a how to test/debug section on the WIKI for the EtherDongle.

Cannot Wait for the Conductor and Slave.

I guess creating a diagram was a waste of time then  <fp.
showing the standard way and a optional way of direct connecting the computer with the dongle.

It's not that the computer needs to be hard wires, it's that the wireless router needs to be able to send and receive multi-cast data on its wireless connection.  Many wireless routers don't.

Diagrams are always good. But a section in the build manual after the programming the pic section with instructions would be great. If it had detail instructions. I consider myself pretty knowledgable but Instuctions are always usefull. Especially after you just finished building it a good here's how to test it would be great. And if we used something like vixen or even a home grown test would be great. I know it sometime hard to do with things depending on other things.

if you try wireless then that's another whole step to cause issues, since you're just trying to get it to work first.  Keep it Simple!
