Smart string controller wire lay out?
« on: July 15, 2012, »
Can you break up a smart string line in fours.
EXAMPLE

Run 25 nodes then run a two feet of line then another set of 25 nodes then two feet of line then another 25 nodes then two feet of line then another 25 nodes then smart string controller.?

 Thanks

Yes, just make sure your connections are either soldered or done in a way to prevent loose/poor connection which would lend itself to voltage drop.

There is also a max limit between nodes if I recall. around 6 feet.

Thanks Jeff

That will work out really nice for what I wish to do.

Is there a maximum amount that you can do that?

I also wander how much those 3 pin connectors would shorten the distance allowed between nodes. For example making 8 foot sections to match furring strip lengths?

The limit would be in voltage loss over the entire length of the run, I don't know enough to know how to calculate that, but I do know enough that if it does happen you would just need to have a new power source to inject power at the point it quits working or the lights become dim enough to notice a difference.

Actually, that is NOT the problem.  The real problem is signal loss on seperations over extended distances and it is not always consistant.  From user data and testing it has been determined to be about 6 feet.  In a noisy enviornment or a bad string it could be less and under perfect conditions it could be more maybe even much more.  Unless you have a bad string, 2 feet should work just fine.
If at first you don't succeed,

I should be able to use some kind of snap connector instead of soldering. It would be easier taking off and on the light strings.

Here, pick up some of these at one of the box stores. They work great.

Thanks Paul but I will need some thing more secure. There will be alot of movement. Know any thing else I can use?

Not sure what you mean by more secure. Are you looking for strain relief - use heat shrink at the connector or ensuring they don't come apart - you will be very surprised at how well these hold?

These will be on a horse. So it will be moving alot.
The lights will be on my extra tack. I will be using these off and on during the Christmas season.
I wish to separate the lights from the feed power lines so I can hook then and unhook them.
So I can keep the ssc light on the tack threw the season.
