I had this exact same idea, mine was just controlled via a 3 axis gyro.
I managed to build a 2D proto, but couldn't figure a good way to make the structure of a sphere.
Now I see this and it makes perfect sense.

Seems like the obvious next step for smart strings. Can you imagine the cost of 2 - 128 count strands of smart strings compressed into a ball. Mighty expensive, but so cool. I want 3!

If someone were to create kits of this (or similar) -- I'd definitely be in!! 
There were some plans posted in Russian, but I'm a little weak with my Russian these days. :)
...and, that's right -- I'd have no idea on how to create a board.

I have the PCB layout skills, but a little week on the controller code stuff.  If someone is serious about this I will work on it.

Well at $160 they would be a tad pricey for me.  You can find that reference (from the builder) if you read the thread following the first link.
