Neutral and hot wire color
« on: February 27, 2010, »
I hate to ask a stupid question but I thought the black wire was hot (+) and the white was neutral (-). In the Lynx manual it shows the black as neutral and the white as hot.

Something about this just doesn't look right.  I just want to make sure before I hook it to the wall.

Your right.  It looks like those are hooked up backwards.

I just looked at it again and the text is correct.  Sorry, I like to put my own words to pictures.  :)  Read the text.

Thanks for the clarification, the first step checks out.

I used some computer server-class power supply cables that were pretty hefty. The colors were non-standard - brown for hot, blue for neutral, and green for ground.

I guess it's not a bad idea to check your wires with a continuity tester when you get these odd colors or whenever you're not sure. The ground is pretty obvious, but the hot will go to the small slot on the polarized outlet and the neutral will go to the larger slot on the plug. And then you have to hope your outlets are wired correctly.

Actually, brown/light blue/green w. yellow stripe are standard colors for the non-US part of the world (and are OK by NEC here too...)

Looks like the pictures were never updated. I checked both v4 and v5 manuals, and pics in both show black going to neutral. As noted above, the text is correct. Had me puzzled until I found this post.

Black is hot, white is not.  Just made that up. :)
